Guild Wars 2 PvE First Impressions

28 August 2012 | 7 Comments » | Mike

As impressive as people believed Guild Wars 2′s PvE was going to be, I’ve never had even the slightest interest in it, for me the game was all about World vs World PvP. During the beta’s I barely touched PvE, however because of the massive queue times during the headstart weekend I was left with no choice but to dive into PvE.

Off the bat I was impressed with the direction ArenaNet took with quests; there were no quest NPCs to talk to which meant I’d never have to run back to turn-in a quest. Perfect, I hated running back anyway.  Everything was laid out on the map for me, so I began checking off the map achievements one by one. After a little while it hit me that this was extremely similar to Assassin Creed’s system. The Vista jumping game replaced the Eagle-eye climbs, public quests replaced the city quests and all points of interests are already marked on the map.

I completed the starting area map and the city map along with the storyline quests bringing my grand total of world achievements to about three or four percent before I moved on to the next map location.  Here I completed a few more quests and achievement, but ultimately it will be where my PvE journey ends.

Sadly my first impressions of Guild Wars 2 PvE will be my last as I saw nothing that really separated it from any other PvE MMORPG. Making all the quests public is nice, but it doesn’t solve the problem of having boring quests and I have no interest in completing hundreds of them before I get to some good ones.

I don’t know if the vast majority of GW2 fans are in a state of euphoria over the launch of the game, but the PvE system is the same thing as every other MMORPG out there. I love that ArenaNet took a big leap with PvP in World vs World, I had a blast in beta and for the short period of time I was actually able to get in during the weekend, but PvE is no different.

Instead of quest hubs were you gather 5-10 quests at a time, the quests are all already marked on your map; then add a few random dynamic quests along the way to increase the quest count. The only difference is the delivery system, which is definitely an improvement, but it doesn’t change the fact that your still just doing boring quests.

I’ll give it to ArenaNet that their quests aren’t as bad some some games, cough*TERA*cough, but they’re certainly not exciting enough to get me to change my mind on PvE. I’m sure the endgame dungeons are fun and perhaps even a few along the way; I just don’t want to go through 50 hours of boring quests to get to them.

Overflow servers save Guild Wars 2 launch from complete disaster

27 August 2012 | 4 Comments » | Mike

I’d like to meet the developer/s who thought up of the overflow server queue solution and shake their hands. ArenaNet, give that guy/gal or team a massive raise because they completely saved your launch from complete and utter disaster. From queues to crashes to disconnects, I probably would have been logged in for a grand total of one-two hours this past weekend if it wasn’t for the overflow servers.

My first login came Saturday early afternoon and soon the crashes began.  After about a 40 min wait on the overflow server I final came up in the queue and was taken to the Gates of Madness server where I instantly tried logging into World vs World. Unfortunately I was hit with a second queue and had to wait another 30 mins before I finally got in, only to crash to my desktop about 10 mins into it.

Ugh, back in the overflow queue, waited 45 mins to get back to Gates of Madness, got lucky this time and only had to wait 20 min for WvW, but again 5 mins into it I crashed again. I think you’re getting the picture.

After that I gave up on WvW and for the next two hours just worked on the PvE part of the game, where again I spent the majority of my time on the overflow server as crashes continued ever 30-60 mins. I think I was on the actual server for maybe 60 mins on Saturday.

Fastforward to Sunday where it seems ArenaNet was able to fix the crashing issues, but queue times were even longer. I think it took about a hour to get off the overflow server and another 60 mins to get into World vs World.

All in all, aside from not being able to get into WvW on Saturday due to the crashes, I enjoyed my time with GW2 this weekend. Had it not been for the overflow servers, this would have been a very different post. I’m scared for tomorrow’s queue times. Might be a few days before I get back into WvW.

What are you doing still reading this? Guild Wars 2 has officially launched it’s headstart!

Guild Wars 2 fans, especially on the east coast, can rejoice as ArenaNet has opened servers three hours ahead of schedule at 12:00am EST. The move comes after fans on the east coast complained a 3:00 am launch time would be too late and it seems their prayers have been answers.

Now if you excuse me I have some battling to do in World vs World.  Also check out our friends at GW2Versus a dedicated World vs World forum with a full list of server forums. See you on the battlefield.

The Secret World 50% off on Amazon this weekend

17 August 2012 | No Comments » | Mike

Amazon is running a 50% off sale for The Secret World (digital version) through the weekend at the price of $24.95. Not bad for a game that just launched a little over a month ago.

Of course if you wait a couple more months it might be free all together, but for those not willing to wait or take the chance, now is the time to pick up your copy of The Secret World for cheap.

8 August 2012 | No Comments » | Mike

If you missed the last Guild Wars 2 stress test, you’re in luck as ArenaNet has just announced that another one is planned for tomorrow, August 9th from 3:00 pm EST to 7:00 pm EST.

Anyone who has pre-purchsed GW2 will have access to it.

Below is a caution from ArenaNet incase you happen to run into connection issues or bugs, as people tend to forget that this is still a test.

We will be actively working on the game during the event, so you might experience connectivity problems or discover features that are not working as designed. Any issues you experience are a result of the rigorous conditions of the stress test, and are in no way representative of the state of the game at launch. By participating in this stress test, you’re helping us make Guild Wars 2 a better game. Thanks for your cooperation—we’ll see you in-game! ~RB2

World of Warcraft Active Subscribers drops by 1.1 Million to 9.1 Million

2 August 2012 | 1 Comment » | Mike

Activision Blizzard reported today that active subscribers for World of Warcraft dropped by 1.1M players to 9.1 million, dropping below the 10 million mark for the first time in years.

Considering that WoW subscriber numbers have been holding steady around 10.2 million for the last 6 months, after losing 1.8 million the year before, it’s a bit worry some to see such a huge drop now. The massive drop could be in anticipation to the Mist of Pandaria expansion or it could mean that WoW truly has hit it’s peak and is in decline.

This puts the lose at 2.9 million players since hitting its peak in 2010 after the Cataclysm expansion launched. Can Mist of Pandaria turn the tide? We will see, but my guess is no.
