LoreHound Crier: The Week Up to 5/12 in a Glance

12 May 2012 | 1 Comment » | Pherephassa

Eeek! I’m late I’m late! I must beg forgiveness to anyone looking forward to my weekly summary; a vacation combined with the opening of The Secret World‘s beta weekend sent me spinning off into the land of distractions. But it’s been another pretty exciting week here at LoreHound! We’ve got item giveaways, MineCraft goodies, news about a few betas and several lengthier pieces that go into more detail than just providing news. I love the longer pieces, as an unabashed MMO addict there’s very little that I love more than long talks about gaming. Game theory, character building, analyses of subscription numbers and playerbase makeup, how to guides –  I love it all.

And of course, my favorite topic – The Secret World! The open beta! Yes, it’s here at last! I have a ton of screenshots that I’ll be posting up later as well as a preview. I’ve been spending way too much time with this game, wanting to squeeze out every possible moment while the servers are up. I think I was up playing until 5am, my eyeballs feel like they’re about to fall out, but I’m still looking forward to later this afternoon after I’ve finished up my errands when I’ll be able to play again! Here’s a screenshot to keep you all entertained until I’m able to put up the full review:

And now, on with the show!

Official Lore Hound Minecraft File Downloads [Updated 5/11/12]

11 May 2012 | 4 Comments » | LHStaff

Hello Minecraft Players! This is where you can download everything needed to play the Single Player Mode (SPM) of our up-coming server world, download the texture pack (and needed HD fix) seen in our “Minecraft Adventures” videos, and download the mod Mordil uses to help in SPM.

After there being multiple updates (recently Update 1.2.5), and rather than multiple links on different articles (or a massive amount of Facebook status updates), we decided to keep a running update page for new updates as they arrive.

Check back every once in a while to see if there is a new update! (Usually around an official Minecraft Update)

MCPatcher (Needed for HD Textures):

Download:

Installation:

  1. Drag the .exe or .jar to where you want it to be located, and run it.
  2. Select the box next to “HD Textures” (and the others for safe measure) and then hit “Patch”.
  3. Once it’s done, run Minecraft with the texture pack and all should work fine.

Single Player Commands:

Description:

  • From the developer: Here

LoreHound Crier: The Week in a Glance

4 May 2012 | 1 Comment » | Pherephassa

Another week has come and gone … it seems like time flies much more quickly since I started writing these weekly summaries! And what a week this has been, not only has TERA launched, but there was some excitement as a long-rumored Elder Scrolls MMORPG was announced. For years, Bethesda has been denying there will ever be a TES MMO, but it seems the temptation was too sweet to pass up and we shall soon have one! I’m of mixed minds about it, I’ll admit. Several years ago I would have jumped in excitement, but I haven’t enjoyed any of the Elder Scrolls games since Morrowind so the prospect of an MMO based on the current state of the series leaves me somewhat uninterested. But I’ll definitely be watching in case I’m surprised.

I was reflecting last week that we were in a sort of golden age of gaming, the announcement of a TES MMORPG seems to continue that trend. Guild Wars 2, The Elder Scrolls, Diablo 3, Torchlight 2 … a lot of heavy hitting franchises are on the horizon. I’m wondering, will we be seeing more announcements for MMORPGs and sequels for other games? Personally, I’d love to hear there was a Yakuza MMO in the works, although I suspect I’m doomed to disappointment there. But next week my enthusiasm will return – keep an eye out, I’ll be reporting on The Secret World‘s first public beta weekend! And on with the show!

SemiFormal Studios Presents: Ensemble Online

30 April 2012 | No Comments » | Randy Denosha

For people that love RTS and MMO games we have some news for you. SemiFormal Studios’, an indie game developer, is busy developing a browser-based game called Ensemble Online. SemiFormal is gunning for lots of diversity with it, giving players the option to build a camps with defensive towers and farms for food, as well as giving the option to go out in the wild and kill mobs to level up. They also emphasis multiplayer by giving the option to work together with friends and build villages together.

SemiFormal Studios provided us with an alpha code to the game, so I decided to check it out. Keep in mind that the game is still in early Alpha and is still lacking in places. There were only three buildings to make and combat is very basic, with numbers flying around to tell the player how much damage he took or has done. The game might have potential, but it’s too early to make an honest opinion about it. If you wanna check out some information about the game than follow this link. The company also has a Kickstarter page if you’re interested in helping them out. I’ll keep an eye out on the game to see what they do in future updates.

LoreHound Crier: The Week at a Glance

20 April 2012 | No Comments » | Pherephassa

It’s been another great week here at LoreHound. More PAX interviews have appeared, we’ve had a few exclusives, and there’s even been some game industry mudslinging. I was terribly excited to see news about Torchlight 2, and I’m sure there’s even more excitement about Diablo 3. I won’t be playing either game as I’ve got weekend plans, but I’m sure between TERA and Diablo 3 there’ll be lots of beta testing going on this weekend.

This week seems to have flown by so quickly! Maybe it’s because I’ve been sleeping through a nasty flu, or wasting lots of time on The Secret War. Actually, given that I’m ranked #2 for my state on the leaderboards, I’d say I’ve been wasting entirely too much time on The Secret War. What can I say, I’ve got not-so-hidden dreams of world conquest, although I’ve been contenting myself with doing my best to keep Brasil and China in the hands of the Dragons. In any event, I feel like no time has passed at all since I wrote last week’s rundown. But enough about me, I’m sure the week’s news is much more interesting!

  • PAX East Interview with Jared Gerritzen of Zombie Studios, who discussed Blacklight: Retribution with iTZKooPA. New maps, game modes, heroes and more!
  • PAX East Interview with Chris Rippy of Robot Entertainment where iTZKooPA gets the scoop on lots of gameplay footage for Orcs Must Die 2.
  • PAX East Interview with Tor Egil Andersen and Erling Ellingsen of Funcom, talking about character progression in The Secret WorldPart Two is where iTZKooPA asks tougher questions, like when will we see more ARGs.
  • itZKooPA talked about the new content patch in Champions Online, and how it put the game back on his radar.
  • PAX East Interview with Victor Kislyi , CEO of Wargaming.net about the upcoming flying MMO World of Warplanes. If you want to take to the skies, there’ll be a public beta in June!
  • Mike told us about Yet Another Free SWTOR Weekend. How many of these do they plan on having? I agree with Mike, they should just get it over with and open up a fulltime free trial.
  • I was excited to see the launch of The Secret War, the Facebook app that’s paired with The Secret World, and discussed the unexpected success that shut it down for a few hours. My wild speculations turned me into a laughingstock – I honestly expected the app would be down for days or weeks instead of hours!
  • The first beta weekend for Guild Wars 2 was announced!
  • TERA‘s open beta weekend kicked of yesterday. Everyone can play this weekend, even if you’ve not purchased the game.
  • SWTOR‘s subscription numbers may be declining, according to analyst group Cowen and Company.
  • Bluehole Studios called NCSoft a corporate bully, and said they won’t back down. TERA will be released, even if they have to fearlessly stomp through the grist of rumors and lawsuits.
  • PAX Interview with Stefan Ramirez of Bluehole Studios. iTZKoopa got the scoop on how the “holy trinity” will play out in TERA, as well as more details about the lauded political system.
  • The Diablo 3 open beta stress test weekend is underway, allowing anyone to get their hands on the game. I haven’t had much interest in this, but I’ll admit to being slightly disappointed it’s this weekend when I won’t be at home to play.
  • PARTY!! It’s the five-year anniversary of Lord of the Rings Online, and iTZKooPA spoke with Aaron Campbell, Senior Producer of LotRO, about the exciting events happening within the game to celebrate. Fireworks, mounts and costumes are just a few of the goodies available during the festivities.
  • PAX Interview with Max Schaefer of Runic Games about co-op, quest sharing and other exciting tidbits in Torchlight 2.

Champions Online Game Systems Overhaul Begins

17 April 2012 | No Comments » | iTZKooPA

I’ve had a love-hate relationship with Champions Online. The second attempt at a superhero MMORPG by Cryptic Studios drew me in with numerous features, advanced customization to the point of full uniqueness, a fast-paced combat style and quirky comic-inspired quests and missions. I considered it a popcorn MMORPG, a guilty pleasure that would be a great compliment to other, more fleshed out experiences I was playing.

Yet it was a full cost title that lacked content, identity and overall direction. For every aspect I enjoyed of the title, I found two that annoyed me. I ragged on the offering so hardly because I wanted to like it. I left shortly before my six month purchase ran its course. It’s F2P return perked my interest, only to send me fleeing due to losing my main character to the freemium cutoff.

After Atari abandoned Cryptic Studios, allowing Perfect World Entertainment to grab the developer at an assumed bargain price, hope returned. PWE had been looking to break into the western market the appropriate way, ie not porting Eastern titles alone, and this was a great first step. A massive development effort would be needed, but we’re seeing the fruits of that labor with On Alert.

The latest content patch adds a few new systems to the game in addition to the expected content and bug fixes. A reputation system lets gamers accumulate prestige over time, opening up new travel power options and gear. The Modification and Fusion System returns customization to the hands of players, even allowing more damage dealing stats.

Mind you, the changes put the game back on my radar. Not my plate. It’s just a step in the right direction. I need a few of these, or a giant leap.

Hit the jump for a batch of stills from the patch. Continue Reading

Cyber-Bullying the Death of Open PvP?

28 March 2012 | No Comments » | Mike

I think not. However according to Tobold, he believes sometime in the future a player will commit suicide in direct response to cyber-bullying in-game, which will lead to a lawsuit and the slow demise of open PvP, because it will be too risky for game companies to allow it.

Tobold’s initial statement reads,

People will continue to play free-for-all PvP games which encourage bad behavior. Cyber-bullying will continue.  At some point some bullied player will actually commit suicide, leave a letter explaining why, and his relatives will file a lawsuit. Between legislators thinking that bashing video games is always good politics, and courts thinking that there is no difference whatsoever between cyber-bullying in a game and cyber-bullying via other online platforms, we will end up with laws against game-related cyber-bullying.

Free-for-all PvP will die or at least be driven far underground into games nobody plays

This statement is fundamentally flawed and should read as is, “Cyber-bullying will continue.” There is absolutely no connection between PvP games and cyber-bullying that can’t be said about any other social media. Put any large group of people together and someone will bully someone else.  I don’t care if it’s in a game, in school, Facebook, message board, sports or online chat. There will always be bullying and if it leads to suicide, there are already laws in place, at least in the US, to deal with it. End of story.

There is no possibly way that the government should, or would, make special additional laws for PvP games. They’re basically chat rooms; how could any gaming company possibly monitor hundreds of thousands of players at the same time chatting or talking via voice-chat? It’s not even possible. There is also an issue of privacy if a company had to do this.  The suggestion that a law like this could pass specifically against PvP games is absolutely ludicrous.

Tobold, I normally agree with you, but you can’t be wronger on this one, I don’t care how dumb politicians get.
