The Spirits of Gaming – Inaugural Overwatch Edition

Posted by on July 1, 2016 - No Comments »

The Spirits of Gaming is where Lorehound staff get together and unwind. We will be choosing a game where a good amount of shenanigans can be found. We will then pair one or many alcoholic beverages with the chosen game to partake in whilst commencing said shenanigans. All around it should be a good time, feel free to stop in on our twitch where we will be streaming live!

This inaugural ‘Spirits of Gaming’ will be Blizzard’s new first person shooter MOBA, Overwatch. With the amount of skill and practice required to become anything close to resembling good at games like these we felt that Overwatch was an excellent choice to get good and shmammered and let others ridicule us.

A Hearthstone Nut’s Live Review of Warcraft as Told to a Warcraft Lore Nut

Posted by on June 28, 2016 - No Comments »

My milkshakes…

This review CONTAINS spoilers to the Warcraft film to any of those unfamiliar with Warcraft lore. If you’re one of those people, then how dare you! At least you’ll get learned from both perspectives.

I didn’t get a chance to see Warcraft for almost tens days after its release. I know, I know, bad blogger. There were plenty of legitimate reasons. Chief among them was fear. Fear that the film may be as bad as the early reviews said. Fear that the lore I was sucked into would be taken and bastardized like so many video game properties before it. Fear that the weight of a massive franchise would crush Duncan Jones’ artistic talent, a talent that I’ve very much enjoyed to date. It’s with much trepidation that I stepped into Auditorium 9 on Tuesday, 3D glasses and a small popcorn in hand. A theater that was completely empty. A theater that I arrived to 10 minutes after the start time. Ominous indeed. I plopped down, munched some kernels and ogled the screen. The credits rolled and I thought “I wonder what Shaktaji would think being someone that’s rather new to the lore…”

She roundly took up the challenge to deliver her newbie review. Via text. Live texts. It began with confusion. Read more…

Leeroy Jenkins Returns Oh So Appropriately

Posted by on June 22, 2016 - 1 Comment »

It was the eleventh anniversary of the Internet meme known as Leeroy Jenkins in mid May. I’m sure you were aware of this, since our Twitter account let you know. Right? I’m definitely going to assume that you know what it is. But Shaktaji pointed out that such an assumption isn’t safe anymore. For one, she didn’t known about it until recently. WoW’s popularity has done anything but increase since the Wrath of the Lich King high. Not to mention that there’s effectively a subgeneration of today’s gamers that were too young to appreciate the humor. Well this weekend gave Jenkins’ shenanigans a rebirth by way of Game of Thrones.

The Novel Post: Warcraft: Bonds of Brotherhood Review

Posted by on June 14, 2016 - No Comments »

lh_bonds_of_brotherhood_review_the_novel_postThis review of the Warcraft: Bonds of Brotherhood novel by Paul Cornell is of the spoiler-free variety. Check out the entire Blizzard catalog in our Extensive Extended Universe post.

Oh, so you are interested in the tie-ins to the Warcraft film. Welcome. Warcraft: Bond of Brotherhood tossed readers some two decades into the past of the film. As the name suggest, the graphic novel is entirely focused on a core group of characters. A group that takes a large role in the film, and other early Warcraft lore. The juvenile trio of Llane Wrynn, Anduin Lothar and Medivh are thrown into battle with only Captain Lothar having had his mettle tested to date. Medivh has seen his arcane abilities come to a head in Dalaran, moving from the mage-filled city to the Tower of Karazhan to take over the role of Guardian of Tirisfal. Prince Wrynn lives that life, a well-trained, never-tested son of a fighting king. Read more…

The Novel Post: Warcraft: Durotan: The Official Movie Prequel

lh_durotan_prequel_warcraftThis review of the Warcraft: Durotan: The Official Movie Prequel novel by Christie Golden is of the spoiler-free variety. Check out the entire Blizzard catalog in our Extensive Extended Universe post.

Oh, so you are interested in the tie-ins to the Warcraft film. Welcome. Warcraft: Durotan sees Christie Golden return to the Warcraft universe where she left off, some 15 years ago after she penned the sequel to the movie’s prequel, Lord of the Clans. Yeah, before World of Warcraft was even released! That story was originally slated for the canceled Warcraft Adventures. Little confused? That’s okay, I’ll kick this Novel Post off more appropriately. Read more…

Does Anyone Care About the Warcraft Movie Tie-ins?

Posted by on June 8, 2016 - 1 Comment »

lh_warcraft_promo_bonds_of_brotherhood_graphic_novel_filmYou’re probably well aware that Warcraft, a film some ten years in the making, is finally hitting theaters in the United States on Friday. If not, I’m thoroughly impressed with your dedication to not consuming any media that has a shred of advertising. The marketing machine around greenskins versus pink skins (why is greenskins a word?) is as powerful as another well-funded greenskin, Shrek. I’m waiting for my Best Buy parking space to be bankrolled by Blizzard. And yet, the multitude of media tie-ins to the franchise, seemingly unmentioned.

Recently, we pointed out that Blizzard has not one, not a pair, but three media tie ins to Warcraft. Add in the recently-panned Illidan novel from mid April to make it a foursome. That’s a torrent of content to backup the movie. We’re talking an official novelization of the movie, a prequel to both the book and movie and a sidestory presented in a graphic novel. Yet there’s little to no promotion even in the target demographic that you and I lie in. What gives? Read more…
