It’s been too long since I last updated this thread of TOR posts, so I feel like I’ll just say it – I’m done with Star Wars: The Old Republic. I was over the moon, I wanted to love it. I played the hell out of it for a short amount of time, and despite repeated let downs and lack of real interest or connection to the story, I kept playing because it’s Star Wars, and Star Wars HAS to be good, right? No. No, it doesn’t. The more time I spent inside of the galaxy, the more it really started dawning on me that I was walking around in the gross, sterile, blue and green screen laden Star Wars galaxy seen in the prequel movies, not the roughshod space fantasy I knew as a child.
The Old Republic stopped feeling like a piece of the Star Wars mythos, and starting feeling as though the horrible CG background of the Phantom Menace became a playable walkabout. Story building missions became as repetitive as the first Assassin’s Creed game, and the dialogue a drawn out bedtime story. I would say that TOR’s saving grace was GSF (Galactic Starfighter), however, with the release of EA’s Star Wars Battlefront, my thirst to pilot SW vehicles in a dogfight has been satiated elsewhere. Needless to say, I don’t think I’ll be spending any more credits in the Galactic Market.
Thanks to Bethesda’s Fallout 4, my couch has been getting a good workout, as I’ve picked my Xbox controller back up for some serious one-on-one action with my favorite console. Fallout, of course, is the quintessential post apocalyptic RPG, and with subtle call backs to the previous games in the franchise, as well as the common themes we’ve all expected, the experience has been a good one so far. I’ve only had to give the X-bone the old hard reboot twice courtesy of a couple glitches, but hey, it’s Bethesda. If not for the occasional freeze-out they might lose some of their charm.
As for my future in MMOs, although I totally missed the boat – I will be starting Neverwinter soon, so look out for my ramblings about that experience coming soon. MTFBWY.
