Neverwinter Online will be a Fully Fledged Free-to-Play MMO

When Cryptic originally announced Neverwinter Online, it was to be a co-op based MORPG. However Perfect World Entertainment, the massive MMO publisher and development company that acquired Cryptic this year, seems to have different ideas.

Today via an IGN article, it was revealed Neverwinter Online will be retooled and changed from a co-op to a fully fledged free-to-play action MMORPG.

Neverwinter will be closer to a game like Nexon’s Vindictus, where combat is controlled by mouse clicks, and where pattern recognition and reflexes are the keys to successfully murdering hordes of monsters.

The game is being built using a modified version of the engine both Star Trek Online and Champions Online use. Cryptic also revealed that content updates for Neverwinter will be entirely free unlike STO and Champions and the in-game store will stick to items such as consumables, potions, cosmetic items and pets.

The new projected release date is now the end of 2012. You can watch the new trailer below.

  1. PWE buys up Star Trek, then publishes a NWN title with its engine, THEN has the nerve to comapre it to Vindictus “Action mmorpg” (this was verified in another website). What a bunch of filthy rats. 1.) NWN is historically known for its D&D dice rolls behind the curtains, and character progression. In fact, NWN was pretty much a mod tool for people to create their RPG’s for frineds. To take that and make an ACTION rpg, makes ZERO sense, as NWN was not far from something like Elderscrolls. That is disgusting. Of course PWE, is at fault. They already have a over a 5 year game and have done nothing but patched it 2 times (PWI), and never updated anything (the content is copy and paste). All their games are cash cows. Dont want to play? Enjoy the quadruple grind and the “How to beat the cash shop” gameplay. BLEH. Thankfully, the pen is still mightier than the digital sword. May the paper model remain to the true fans.

  2. For some reason I think all your ranting here just sounds like you didn’t even take the time to even read the article and just went on one. Again read the quote “the in-game store will stick to items such as consumables, potions, cosmetic items and pets”. So with that being said what in the nine hells does “Enjoy the quadruple grind and the “How to beat the cash shop” gameplay”. Wow man take the time to read article before going on a rant like that.

  3. Has anyone been playing STO and Champions because Perfect Worlds customer support is HORRENDOUS. I have submitted multiple tickets into their system only to be completely ignored…going on 10 days and no response. Complete and utter FAIL.
