During SOE Fan Faire 2011 it was revealed that Planetside 2 is currently under development. It is being touted as a new kind of MMOFPS that will deliver truly epic, massive scale combat never before seen in an MMOFPS. Combat will not be between dozens of troops, but thousands, and on land and air, with vehicle combat playing a major role.
As the original, there will be three factions for players to choose from, Terran Republic, New Colglomerate and Vanu Sovereignty. Each faction will be fighting for control of land and resources and there are no instanced battles. All combat takes place on the world map.
Unlike the original where players took control of choke points and structures, PS2 is setup in a way that factions can take over entire areas, including resources in the area. Losing a building doesn’t neccesarily mean you lost the surrounding resources as you’ll have to take those over as well.
The skill and class system are also more what you would find in any of today’s FPS. Players will be able to change between classes seamlessly, so if you want to be a pilot one day and a sniper the next you can.
No information about when PlanetSide 2 will enter beta or when it will launch has been released. As well as no info on whether it will be free or pay to play. But we do have this trailer.
