The Totally Rad Show: Top 5 Video Games of 2010

29 December 2010 | No Comments » | Kershocker

Wow, 2010 is almost gone and 2011 is about to begin. As you may imagine, lots of websites are releasing articles regarding the best Video Games of this year. I have been checking some of them out, but I’ve been waiting for this one for a while. It is, as you may now know because of the title, The Totally Rad Show‘s Top 5 Video Games of 2010.

In today’s review, each host let us know their choices and attempts to decide which deserves to be considered as the best 2010 video game. Console games and MMORPGs are included in their lists, so you will get to see a pretty wide variety of titles.

If I had to choose between the 3 lists, I’d have to go with Alex Albrecht’s selections. Oh, and before you ask, I did not go with Alex’s list just because it has World of Warcraft: Cataclysm in it!

Now it’s your turn. If you had to make a list of the Top 5 Video Games of 2010, which games would you include?

Lore Hound LivePlay: Glory to the Alliance

27 December 2010 | 1 Comment » | Mordil

In this edition of LivePlay, I’ll be doing my version of For the Hoard, as I go and (hopefully) obtain Anzu, the Raven Lord, the Swift White Hawkstrider / Phoenix Hatchling, and Rivendare’s Deathcharger. With my new-found abilities of soloing Burning Crusade heroics, I’ve routinely farmed these mounts out. If there’s any others you’d like to see me go after, or think of any I’ve missed, post them in the comments!

Watch me do it, tomorrow at 10 am PST (1 pm EST). If you can’t view it below, or would like to watch it at our channel, click here.

Cataclysm Dungeon Location Gallery (Where is the Entrance to…)

22 December 2010 | 9 Comments » | Mordil

Update: As of Patch 4.0.6, players will no longer be required to find a dungeon’s location in order to queue for it. Why? Take a look at our analysis of the subject for more. Until then, scroll on for our handy dandy dungeon location guide.

In the latest expansion of World of Warcraft, Blizzard changed how queuing up for dungeons work. You have to discover the entrance to be able to queue up from anywhere using the Looking For Dungeon tool. This threw many people for a loop, not knowing where an instance entrance is. That’s where Lore Hound plays their helping hand. Below is a compiled list of the new Cataclysm 5-mans with screen-shots of the location, the level range, and a short description of the instance.

Hope this helps!

Blackrock Caverns (80-83)

  • Location: Blackrock Mountain, Searing Gorge/Burning Steppes. Head towards the Blackrock Spire entrance portal, and take a right. Follow the hallway and take the first left. Follow this path until there’s a fork going left down a walkway, and straight upwards. Take a right down the path (or jump, for those daredevils out there) and take another right. Voila. Alternatively, take the Mole Machine from Finkle.
  • Description: It is a series of tunnels created by Twilight’s Hammer clan in order to gather the remaining Ragnaros’ minions and transport them back and forth to Mount Hyjal, as well as to perform horrific experiments conducted by the nihilistic cult in order to use the essence of the dragon in order to transform the worthy into dragonspawn.

Goblins and Worgen Become the Norm

17 December 2010 | 3 Comments » | pixiestixy

Some transitions happen faster than you realize. It was only a couple of weeks ago that the first Goblins and Worgen appeared as playable characters in World of Warcraft. Those first couple of days, when not soaking up questing goodness, I was oohing and ahhing at the new additions to the WoW family.

I was still caught by surprise at seeing their little toons running around Azeroth, even though I had known for more than a year that they soon would be arriving as playable characters. I marveled at their cute green features and furry snarls as they sought to complete questing of their own. Between logins on my main, I made a few versions of the new guys, although never logging in with them, simply to get more of the character creation process. And you know I couldn’t get enough when I saw the first in-game versions of their /dances.

And almost as suddenly, the novelty wore off. After running PUGs with cutesy goblins who don’t know crap about how to play — I suppose it dawned on me that they are just as fallible as everyone else who’s playing. If not, even moreso at this point.

I don’t know why, exactly I didn’t realize it to begin with. Continue Reading

The Totally Rad Show Takes on WoW: Cataclysm

15 December 2010 | 4 Comments » | pixiestixy

Just because I know a good portion of our audience followed us from our previous digs, I know a lot of you also probably watch or would watch the Totally Rad Show. Some of you may even be members of the Totally Rad Guild along with our own Mr. Juggynaut. Personally, I’m an occasional watcher, and was totally pulled in by today’s episode.

Below, you can watch for yourself as hosts Alex Albrecht,  Jeff Cannata and Dan Trachtenberg take on WoW: Cataclysm and talk through their experiences with the new content. It may not be anything super new or unexpected for those of us here who also play, but nevertheless I find it interesting to see their takes on coming back to the game after a break from playing. And if you’re not a WoW player, take a look and see what you think!

Topics covered include: questing, starting zones, the grind to level 80, the dungeon finder, dungeon difficulty and the clarity of the game’s overall direction. Includes a couple of spoilers, so beware if you haven’t gotten through the new zones yet.

Cataclysm: Inconsistent Cinematic Quality

14 December 2010 | 6 Comments » | iTZKooPA

Time and again, guildies have gawked at the new direction questing has taken in Cataclysm. We’re bombarded with in-game cinematic scenes from all sides. They introduce us to the quest topic at hand as we enter a zone, cut in to our play time to give more impact to major plot points during a chain and culminate the stories before we leave a zone. Some players balk at the loss of control, but most have cheered the introduction of a cinematic  experience as a step in the right direction for questing.

Millions of players have already completed Mount Hyjal, which means they’ve all been taken through the epitome of Cataclysm’s cinematic arc. Players enter the zone on the back of an emerald drake with the idea that a quick tour is in order. This tour quickly turns into a nightmare. The hold has been destroyed, reduced to cinders. As the dragon swoops and dives around the zone his jaw drops as he approaches none other than Deathwing. With Ragnaros beneath him. The sight, for avatars and players alike, is simply astounding.

Blizzard’s cinematic crew uses every trick in the book to rope us in. We’re set up to expect a boring “Off to the left…and to the right you’ll see…” flight as we head to join Malfurion’s forces against Ragnaros. Only we don’t quite make it that far. We’re quickly thrown into view of the biggest-hookah-smoking-dragon ever. Visually, the world in the immediate vicinity is nothing but fire, lava and cinders, as suggested by the quest title. The sound is forebodingly still at first, then it shifts to the sound of flames and bubbling lava. Few will forget the intro, and outro, cinematic delivered in Mount Hyjal. There’s too much action, too much lore, too much organization, production and direction present to leave your cerebral cortex unchanged.

Click through to see how it all goes sour.

Cataclysm Sells More Than 3.3 Million Copies

13 December 2010 | 2 Comments » | Amatera

And that’s just in the first 24 hours after launch:

IRVINE, Calif. — December 13, 2010 — Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft®: Cataclysm, the third expansion for the critically acclaimed massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), sold through more than 3.3 million copies as of its first 24 hours of release, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time.* This milestone eclipses the previous record of more than 2.8 million copies sold in 24 hours, set in November 2008 by Blizzard’s second World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King®.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm was simultaneously released in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand on December 7, and became available in Korea and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau on December 9. More than 10,000 stores throughout the world opened their doors at midnight to welcome players who wanted to be among the first to obtain a copy of the expansion. In addition, more than 15,000 players attended official launch events hosted by Blizzard and key retail partners in the US, Canada, France, Germany, Russia, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, and the region of Taiwan.

“We had to bring Azeroth to the brink of destruction in Cataclysm, but the result was our best expansion yet,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We want to thank all of our new, existing, and returning players throughout the world for their incredible enthusiasm and support, and we look forward to hearing what they think about all the new content.”

As cited in the full press release, that makes this expansion officially bigger than Wrath of the Lich King, but not bigger than Activision-Blizzard’s other Q4 release, Call of Duty: Black Ops. Of course, we’ve got to remember that game had months and months of in-your-face promotion and it released on many different platforms with three different SKUs at the same time. Cataclysm also hasn’t hit mainland China yet, and going by the general release schedule for such things, may not do so for awhile.

Grats, Blizzard! You once again have the fastest-selling PC game of all time!
