Eve Online CSM Chairman “The Mittani” Announces Resignation [Updated]

28 March 2012 | No Comments » | Mike

Two days ago we reported that CCP launched an investigation against their democratically elected CSM chariman, ”The Mittani” for some comments during last week’s Eve Fanfest 2012.

For those of you not up to speed, during his presentation The Mittani aired out a private conversation with another Eve Online player that he had scammed. The victim revealed he had become depressed after recently going through a divorce, to which The Mittani mocked during his rank, then egged on the audience and viewers watching to continue harassing him in-game.

Today the CSM Chairman has announced via his Twitter feed that he will be resigning as chairman and stepping down from CSM. He also stated he will be sending the victim all of his in-game money (ISK) as a direct apology.

It is still unclear what actions CCP will take against The Mittani, as they have in the past banned players for such activities, ranging from temporary bans to permanent ones depending on the severity of the cyber-bullying.

Update: CCP has posted their official response to this matter, banning The Mittani for 30 days. In the response, it was mentioned that even though he resigned from the CSM, he would be allowed to run again in future elections.

CCP Launches Anti-Bullying Investigate in Response to Eve Fanfest Player Panel

26 March 2012 | 3 Comments » | Mike

Eurogamer is reporting that CCP has launched an investigation against CSM chairman, Alexander ‘The Mittani’ Gianturco, after he presented at Eve Fanfest during the “unfiltered” player panel last week.

Eve Online, like the real world, is one of the few MMORPGs, if not the only, that allows its players to participate in in-game crimes and scams; allowing players to steal in-game items and currency from each other.

During his presentation, The Mittani aired out a private conversation with one of the Eve Online players that he had scammed. The victim revealed that he had recently gone through a divorce and had become depressed, to which The Mittani mocked during his rant, stating “We’re sure that he’s not dead” and “he might have committed suicide.

The Mittani then revealed the player’s in-game username and encouraged the audience and viewers watching to find the player in-game to harrass them, in the hopes he would eventually act out on his depression and commit suicide.

CCP public relations and social media speicalist, Ned Cokes, responded with the following statements,

“I want to reassure you that CCP in no way condones the harassment of players, especially those who suffer from depression or suicidal thoughts, as we understand the possible consequences of such abhorrent behaviour,”

While the content of online interactions between players cannot realistically be gated within our game worlds, we do take very seriously accusations of such behaviour between our players

We are undertaking a full internal review of this panel as well as the process used for vetting the panel’s materials. Even though this panel was billed as unfiltered by CCP, we expect public presentations to be courteous and professional towards others.

I realize this was the “unfiltered” portion of the event, but for the head of the Eve Online player elected CSM to blatantly show no regard for other players well-being, is quite shocking. I watched part of his speech during the live stream and couldn’t stomach his personality for more than a few mins. Sorry, but he just seemed like a complete asshole to me; I don’t care if he was drunk. I turned it off after he read the messages between him and the victim, before he gave out the players username and asked the audience to harass him, but I’m not surprised he went on to do that.

It will be interesting to see what CCP does to address the issue, but I think The Mittani can kiss his CMS chairman position goodbye.

Buy a Graphics Card with Eve Online PLEX

24 March 2012 | No Comments » | Mike

Today at Eve Fanfest, CCP announced that it would allow players to start purchasing real-world items with ISK earned in Eve Online.

CCP will make available 100 Nvidia GeForce  GTX560 graphics cards for the price of 20 PLEX or about $299, if you bought the PLEX with real money. Eve accounts are limited to one graphics card, so if you happen to be an EvE billionare, you won’t be able to buy a bunch if you planned on reselling them.

This is quite a step for CCP to take, by allowing people to use an in-game currency to buy real-world items. Currently there’s a limited supply and only one item, but it’ll be interesting to see if CCP expands this in the future to including more items or even open up a full store if this proves to be a success.

Guild Wars 2 Microtransactions Explained: RMT Included

20 March 2012 | No Comments » | Mike

Today ArenaNet revealed more details about Guild Wars 2‘s microtransaction item-store, revealing that it will allow players to participate in real-money-trading (RMT).

The basic system works on three currencies: gold, gems, and karma. The karma currency is not trade-able, and is only used for unique in-game rewards. However, the gold and gems currencies can be traded freely; with gems being purchasable with real money, and are the only accepted currency in the item-store.  This works similar to EVE Online‘s PLEX system, but goes a bit further.

With EVE‘s system, PLEX can only be used for one thing: to add game-time to your account. Players can purchase extra PLEX, and sell it in-game to players, who can then purchase it with in-game credits. This gives players a way to play EVE Online free, if they’re good at making money in-game.

Guild Wars 2 system is similar, but instead of one purchasable item, it gives players an entire item-store to buy things with.  This also creates a dynamic between the two currencies, as gold will always fluctuate in value, while gems will not. The reason being, that the price of items in the item-store are a lot more consistent than items sold in-game by other players.

This system then creates a sub-market that will actually allow players to make, potentially, huge profits by constantly trading gold for gems. When the value of gold is high, trade it all for gems. As the value drops, trade your gems back to gold, and depending on the fluctuation, you’ll get more gold back then what you started with.

The good news is that the item-store will only sell cosmetic items and items to speed up certain in-game processes; most likely EXP boosts and things of that nature. ArenaNet made the following statement about selling items that give players any sort of advantage,

But it’s never OK for players to buy a game and not be able to enjoy what they paid for without additional purchases, and it’s never OK for players who spend money to have an unfair advantage over players who spend time

The reasoning behind this move is to prevent gold farmers from ruining the game as they’ve done with other MMORPGs. By allowing the players themselves to buy and sell gold, it destroys the RMT blackmarket.

As far as I’m concerned, ArenaNet can do no wrong. The system sounds great, and I’m even more excited for GW2; if that’s even possible.

TERA To Feature “RIFT” Like Invasions

9 March 2012 | 5 Comments » | Mike

Called the Nexus system, TERA will feature “dynamic” public events where portals will randomly open up in the game world, allowing monsters from the enemy’s realm to pour in. Pretty much the same thing that is implemented into RIFT‘s system.

When a “Nexus portal” opens up, a message will be announced on the server, and all players will receive a quest to help defend against the invasion. Players who successfully help defend will then receive rare and powerful items.

Being a MMO game with open PvP, I’m not quite sure how this will work,  as I’m sure some players, or guilds that are warring with each other, will take this as an opportunity to attack the defenders. Not that I will mind that; it’s a hell of a lot more dynamic then what RIFT has.

However, it’s still disappointing that En Masse is just copying what Trion has already done. Why not innovate some, instead of a boring scripted PvE event. Allow guilds to open up their own portals to attack players or enemy guilds? How great would that be? One guild might be in the middle of a group quest or raid, the guild they’re warring against learns where they are, teleports in, and all hell breaks loose.  That would be something to write about.

Apart from revealing the “Nexus system”, En Masse also revealed it will have a “PLEX” like system that EVE Online currently uses. An in-game item/currency will be available for players to buy, with real money, and can then be used to add game-time to their accounts. Like EVE‘s PLEX system, this will allows players to potentially play for free: if they collect enough of the currency. Although, this also creates a backdoor real money trade (RMT) market for those buying more than they need, and selling the items in-game for in-game currency.

DUST 514 Will Be Free-to-Play + No PS Vita

5 March 2012 | No Comments » | Mike

CCP revealed quite a bit of information about DUST 514 today; the biggest being that they are dropping their “cover charge“ and are going completely free-to-play with it. Initially, CCP stated that the game would be free, however, would require players to purchase between $10-20 worth of in-game currency upon first log in. Thankfully, CCP has seen the light, and has now dropped that fee.

Also revealed today is that DUST 514 will not be playable on the Playstation Vita. The PS Vita is the new hand-held gaming device from Sony that allows PS3 players to continue their game on the Vita. Players will be able to access their DUST 514 accounts to access the market, equip, customize their characters, vehicles, and more; however, they won’t be able to actively play the game.

Of course, it is not completely out of the picture either. DUST 514 executive producer Brandon Laurino stated,

As we continue to explore what the possibilities are, between Vita and PS3, of which there are many, we’ll keep updating the app with stuff like that over time.

Later this month, at Eve Fanfest, DUST 514 will be available to attendees for the first time.  Eve Fanfest is planned for March 22-24 and will be in Reykjavik, Iceland.
