New Fallen Earth Developers Named; Blood Sports Patch Dated

23 April 2010 | No Comments » | iTZKooPA

The new mutation of Graboids! Find a rock!

It’s taken the company a few weeks, but Fallen Earth finally has a replacement in line for the departing Lee Hammock.  My main gripe of Fallen Earth’s most recent State of the Game address was that the company didn’t layout any restructuring plans.  It was just a goodbye, brush-it-under-the-table, nothing-to-see-here mention.  Now players can finally rest easy knowing that someone (actually, it seems like two people) will replace the Lead Game Designer.

Fallen Earth announced not one, but four position changes for the development stuff.  All of which come from within the company and have been a part of it for at least three years.  Basically, they know the game as well as anyone.

  • Wes Platt – Director of Content Development
  • Marie Croall – Senior Game Designer (closest replacement for Hammock)
  • Greg Roth – Senior Systems Designer
  • Josh Peery – Content Team Lead (the backup)

Marie and Wes will be available for a little one-on-many dev chat next Tuesday, April 29, at 3:00 PM EST via Twitter.

During the creation of this very post I received an e-mail from Fallen Earth with more exciting news.  The Blood Sports patch, v1.4 which we previewed during PAX East, will be going live on May 7.  It’ll include four PvP areas, 500+ achievements, the Clan Wars system, a huge new sub-sector called Deadfall and the Blight Wolf Mount.

Check out the preview for the full details on Patch v1.4.

Fallen Earth: Lead Game Designer Lee Hammock Departing

6 April 2010 | 1 Comment » | iTZKooPA

Coming out of left field yesterday was the announcement that Lee Hammock, the man who helped shape Fallen Earth into the burgeoning MMOG that it is today, will be leaving the company.  Lee was a part of the Fallen Earth team for over four years.  He was staple in community shenanigans, helped shape the humor of the title, and is just a friendly guy to have a beer with.  “The Beard Man” gave his soul, hell, even his beard, to the game. PAX East 2010: Fallen Earth Patch V1.4 Preview

29 March 2010 | 2 Comments » | iTZKooPA

My sit down with Dave Haydysch did not begin with complaints regarding cell reception or gazing at the screen of a GM.  No, we had a far simpler first conversation.  It turns out that the company is not only working on the most amazing mobile application for a video game ever, but also another immense patch for Fallen Earth.  Patch v1.4 has two main components to it, the addition of PvP by way of Blood Sports and the new PvE lands of Deadfall Point.

Players have been asking for PvP since time began and v1.4 is going to deliver a fleshed out experience thanks to the bankers of Fallen Earth.  The entrepreneurial-minded folks have devised four different ways for players to tear each other apart, all in the name of making a buck.  Players simply copy their DNA into the banker database – free of charge – and then they can participate in any of the four PvP modes thanks to clones.

Deathmatch and team Capture the Flag subscribe to the standard FPS game modes.  Survival is every-man-for-themselves as the soul goal is to not die.  Therefore killing isn’t rewarded, other than it means you did not die.  Assault is the most unique game type to Fallen Earth.  It pits teams against each other.  One is forced to run a gauntlet of monsters as the other teams tries to stop them.  Every mode caps out at 16 players, either in 8v8 teams or solo.  All of this is available without leaving your current line of progression, thanks to a handy queue from anywhere system.

Rewards include monetary gains, as well as marks to purchase additional PvP-centric gear.

Players that would rather see the fruits of their labor, and not that of greedy businessmen and women, should head out to Deadfall Point.  In this not-so-desolate area, players will be greeted with six new instances and 130 new missions.  Many of which are tied to the new faction, Sheva’s Favored and spread across a land the size of half a sector. You’ll want to be sure to complete them though, because v1.4 will also be raising the level cap from level 46 to level 50.  New crafting recipes, weapons armor and two new mounts (one of which can be seen in our random chat video) round out the offering of new content.

Last, but not least, is a technology upgrade to the tools the developer uses to make those gorgeous landscapes.  Dave showed off the ability for level designers to actually work with the terrain, instead of getting something to look like terrain.  Gone will be hard or jagged edges pulled and stretched across the ground under out feet.  The structures will appear more rounded, weathered, and natural.  Following the precedent set by the earlier graphical update, the sculpting ability will make every bit of landscape in the game prettier, not just the new stuff.

Patch V1.4 is set for release in the same time frame as the amazing mobile application, Q2 2010.  It is certainly shaping up to be a patch that has a little something for everyone.

PAX East 2010: Fallen Earth Mobile Application Live Demo

27 March 2010 | 2 Comments » | LHStaff

WoW Armory? Pssh. Mobile Auction House? Already old news. While other developers have been busy publishing basic push content on handheld devices, the people behind post-apocalyptic MMORPG Fallen Earth are allowing you near-full, real-time access to your characters right from your iPhone! Want to check in with your guild? Feel like working on some crafting skills while you’re waiting in line at the DMV? Maybe your OCD is just compelling you to re-arrange your bags at work? Yes, Lore Hounds, there is an app for that (and it’s really only the start of what this thing can do)!

Our very own iTZKooPA got to sit down with one of the game’s Project Managers (the mysterious and dashing “Dave”) at this weekend’s PAX East event to talk about the application and get an extensive live demo of its various capabilities. Even if you don’t currently play Fallen Earth (hint: you should), this is a seriously cool piece of software and something that every other major MMO developer should take note of. Check out the video below, we know it’ll wow you:

PAX East 2010: Chatting About Fallen Earth (New Content, Mounts, And More)

27 March 2010 | 1 Comment » | LHStaff

Things rarely go smoothly at the very moment when you need them to work the most (just ask the Canadians). Such was the case with Fallen Earth‘s new mobile application, as AT&T’s typically dodgy service delayed the live demonstration of the software on the Project Manager’s iPhone. Though an unfortunate turn of events, it did give iTZKooPA a chance to shoot the breeze with Dave and discuss a variety of different topics including new and forthcoming content (hello, new mount!), the recent split of the development team from parent company Icarus, and even a smidgen WoW talk finds its way into the proceedings.

Besides, everything worked in the end, right? Fans of Fallen Earth will no doubt enjoy the collection of clips below:

MMOGs Heading To Facebook In Full Force

24 March 2010 | No Comments » | iTZKooPA

It strikes me as ironic that days after Activision CEO Bobby Kotick admitted that his company is hot and bothered by the success of Facebook games a pair of recent MMOGs will be getting a presence on the social networking site.  Sure, World of Warcraft has its own application – one that I refuse to use – but Fallen Earth and Runes of Magic will be taking it a step further.  Fallen Earth, LLC and Frogster Interactive are producing entirely new products set in the respected universe of the games.

Runes of Magic: The Challenge is being developed as a whole new game for the platform.  The app will utilize network gaming and viral communications to instill a sense of “adventure, exploration, and strategy elements” upon players.  RoM: The Challenge is being designed by Frogster to lure Facebookers to the free-to-play game by awarding cards with key codes for in-game items.

Fallen Earth: Faction Wars appears to have a different end game.  Icarus Studios is developing the title as a stand-alone game with no cross contamination to speak of.  But that doesn’t mean the game will stray from its big brother.  Faction Wars will have players fighting over nine “conflict towns” as they develop their characters via missions, crafting and even PvP.  The same classes and factions will be present, but the characters created will not be tied together in any way.  It appears that the game is nothing more than a marketing tool.

Obviously, both games are marketing tools, the companies are just executing the final push differently.  RoM is giving Facebookers a reason to check out their game – the in-game loot – while FE seems to be content with just spreading the brand.  There’s merit in both approaches but one thing is for certain, expect a ton of additional status update spam on the likes of Farmville’s scale.

Would you like to see the games more linked, possibly even importing characters (assuming security isn’t an issue)?  Or can we truly become too saturated?

RoM: The Challenge and FE: Faction Wars are both due out in Q2 2010.  Perhaps we’ll see more of them PAX East this weekend.
