Rift Goes Free-to-Play With Rift Lite

6 February 2012 | 1 Comment » | Pherephassa

Been holding out on giving Rift a try in the hopes it’ll go free to play? Now’s the time! TrionWorlds  has finally taken a first step toward the free-to-play dream – now you can play the first 20 levels for free! There’s no time limit, and no credit card required, all you need is the download and a Trion account. Rift Lite is available for anyone, whether you’ve previously played the game or not.

I’ve never been a fan of the timed game trials and demos, so I’m glad to see more trials that are limited by level rather than time.  It’s a better deal than a 3 day trial, that’s for sure. I may even give it a try, to see how the game has changed since closed beta. I wonder if this means we’ll eventually see a full free-to-play Rift?

What do you think is Rift‘s future?

Everquest Going Free-to-Play

31 January 2012 | 1 Comment » | LHStaff

Following in the footsteps of Everquest 2, the original online gaming crack, Everquest will be going free-to-play this March, only 2 months from now.

Everquest will give players many options to choose from including a premium subscription, Silver and Free membership levels, item unlockers and more.  New players will also receive a Welcome Pack containing items to help them get started.

Pretty exciting news for veteran EQ players and even people like me who’ve  never played EQ. With same themepark MMO games being released every few months, I might give EQ a try as long as D3 or GW2 doesn’t come out before it.

Global Agenda: If (Recursive Colony = True) Then Introduce It; Else Impatient++

23 September 2011 | No Comments » | Beararms

On September 21st, Hi-Rez Studios released the much-anticipated free expansion Recursive Colony onto the live servers for its popular MMO shooter, Global Agenda. Recursive Colony is Global Agenda’s largest content update to date and its first major expansion since the game went free-to-play.

Recursive Colony is centered around the idea that the  humans of Dome City are being attacked by a hive-minded army of robot-building robots bent on the destruction of humans, and yes, I am very close to making a reference to the Terminator series. The new hive mind doesn’t just add a few new instanced missions and some flairs. That wouldn’t do for the cluster’s grandiose plans. Instead, an entire new zone, PvP maps, and daily repeatable missions will keep players coming back for more.

Good thing the resources are apparently infinite.

“North Sonora,” the new zone added to Global Agenda‘s map, holds the shooter’s major new content. By popular demand, the developer added in a series of chain quests and repeatable quests to give players something to focus on besides the grind of instanced PvE/PvP missions. These quests can either be done by solo agents or in teams. Depending on the mission, players may find themselves exploring the open world or sent with a band of your friends into a Skyne- I mean Recursive Colony -hive to take the fight to the machines. The Novel Post: Warcraft: Legends Volume 1 (Free for Download on iPad/iPhone through Thursday)

1 June 2011 | No Comments » | pixiestixy

This review of Warcraft: Legends Volume I is of the spoiler-free variety.

The five-volume Warcraft: Legends series has been out for a good while now, with the first book released in 2008 and the other volumes coming out over the course of about a year. But I had not yet had the chance to read them, and they actually had been off my radar for quite some time until last week when Cryptozoic announced that it had acquired exclusive rights to distribute digital versions of Blizzard’s extended universe manga.

Along with that announcement came the promotion of offering the first volume of Warcraft: Legends for free via the new Cryptozoic Comics app for iPhone and iPad. I jumped on that opportunity, and although it’s a bit belated, wanted to share my thoughts on the book for those of you also pondering the acquisition of free goodies while they’re still gratis.

Legends offers a diverse line of four unrelated stories set in various stages of the Warcraft universe.

The first story, Fallen is a collaboration between Richard Knaak and Jae-Hwan Kim. The first part of the Trag Highmountain story, Fallen follows up from the Sunwell Trilogy. The tauren Trag, who readers were first introduced to in Warcraft: Shadows of Ice, finds himself reborn as one of the undead after defeating the Baron Valimar Mordis. Mordis who had stolen the orb of Ner’zhul from the scourge and raised a frost wyrm, ultimately intending to spread the will of the forsaken. Trag crushed both the Baron and the orb — but in doing so cursed himself to undeath. Continue Reading

Azeroth’s Beauty Contest: Top 10 Hottest WoW Characters (Part 2)

22 April 2011 | 6 Comments » | pixiestixy

Here we are, back with the continuation of Azeroth’s Beauty Contest. Last time, we revealed our #10 to #6 picks for the Hottest WoW Characters, and now were back for the top 5. As with last time, we’re aiming to keep this conversation as classy as we can, given the subject. Now onward to the winners:

5. Jaina Proudmoore –Stong, independent, beautiful, not to mention being one of the most powerful sorceresses in all of Azeroth, it’s no surprise that Jaina claims a spot on the list.

Perhaps what makes her even more appealing is her strong belief in peace and welcoming nature to all who share that vision. She dreams of uniting the forces of both the Horde and the Alliance, and has at certain times in the past succeeded in that mission when working toward a common goal or in aiming to kill a shared enemy. Too bad she has poor taste in men.

At least WoW developers have seen it fit to continue to update her character model to best show off her womanly assets.

4. Sylvanas Windrunner — In both life and undeath, Sylvanas remains one of the most dangerously lovely characters in the World of Warcraft universe. A military genius, she was Ranger-General of Silvermoon before getting murdered at the hand of Arthas and then being brought back as one of his minions.

But she fought back and regained her free will, even leading the Forsaken in their fight against the Scourge. I find it an interesting twist of fate that both her and the #5 hottie have had their futures shaped largely by the next one up on the list…

Global Agenda Spec Trees Remain Bland, Uninspired, Restrictive

21 April 2011 | No Comments » | iTZKooPA

Global Agenda’s recent relaunch as Global Agenda: Free Agent had a lot going for it. Obviously, free-to-play is a much loved alternative to paying. Hi-Rez Studios went all in with the relaunch, as so many companies do, developing new content while redesigning the old to coalesce with the new vision. Droves of players have joined and returned to Dome City, expectations high and wallets neglected. Ronix has been having a good time. I on the other hand, was sorely disappointed with the turnout of my most anticipated update.

I have been waiting for Hi-Rez Studios to redesign the specialization trees for the four classes since the game was launched. In fact, I knocked the game’s initial level of “polish” in the review I had written because “the specialization trees are uninspired.” That was just over a year ago. Since then, two major content patches have been produced, and little has changed.

I had high hopes after reading the Free Agent patch notes, but they were soon dashed on the ground like an unfortunate player after a jet pack malfunction. The specialization trees remain largely the same, slight balance tweaks being the only changes. Players are still stuck with an anaemic amount of cookie cutter builds and uninspired talent names. We remain restricted in our options, shackled by a baker’s dozen worth of talent points. Yes, I’m aware that adding new talents would upset balance, but that kind of content would have gone a long, long, way towards making the game fresh for current and returning players, while polishing it for the newcomers.

Relaunching is a major ordeal. It’s done when a game is either struggling to make it as a subscription title or the suits believe that F2P is the way to go (and the modifications to the new format aren’t cost preventative). Every recent relaunch of a former subscription title has been met with a parade of players returning or being introduced to the game. This is when the title needs to impress. A short window with a rush of players is all it gets. Many companies spend weeks, if not months preparing. A handful go as far as to beta test the reroll of the game.

Hi-Rez Studios seemingly flipped a switch, changing the game from an expansion-based model to a free-to-play model in a week’s time. The dungeon content was ready, but the little things got missed.

The little things, like being able to diversify yourself from every other medic, add to longevity and keep the players coming back.

Global Agenda: Dome 49 is Going Down

18 April 2011 | 1 Comment » | Ronix

As you may know, Global Agenda has recently received a content update and also became fully free-to-play. This sort of transition from one business model to another can be a challenging process for most games. However, the guys at HiRez already have shown that they are not afraid to take risks and modify their game to match a new direction they have chosen. Plus, the structure of Global Agenda itself, with its lobby-type system and instance-based gameplay has somewhat eased this process.

It was slightly disappointing to see that, despite the injection of fresh blood from new players rushing in to check out the free-to-play update, the queue waiting times still remained relatively long. You would think with more people queuing for matches, the system would allocate teams faster. But, sadly, that is not the case. This seems to be an issue from the developer’s side, and I hope they address this problem in the near future.

The update brought a couple of new maps, a new dome defense raid, as well as class tree changes. Going by the official patch notes and my own merc experiences, the developers’ aim was to balance out certain deadlock scenarios that occurred during matches and put a bump in the otherwise fairly stream-lined gameplay. An example of this would be the changes done to the Medic’s Paingun. Originally, with the -50% speed debuff from the weapon, a good assault and medic combo could pretty much tear up any target they laid their hungry eyes upon. With the new patch, the speed debuff is only 30%, but the target also receives -20% less healing. This gives your victim an actual chance to escape and, at the same time, grants the Paingun additional utility. Yes, I say that having a Medic as my main. Still, it is way too early to tell how the revised specializations will affect gameplay in the long-term, so let’s just wait and see how things pan out.

The new Dome Defense Raid, or DDR as some like to call it (not to be confused with Dance Dance Revolution), is probably the most exciting addition to the game. Not only does it give us cool targets to pew-pew at, but it also adds a layer of immersion to the setting of Global Agenda. With the introduction of the new raid, Dome City no longer seems to be just a glorified lobby. When you see it being invaded, you can’t help but feel that it is an actual place of habitat, set in the middle of a desert and surrounded by enemies.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Then a video must be worth a few thousand at least, and that’s why I’m including a video of a Dome Defense Raid I did with a random group of fellow agents. Watch us badly screw-up, get blown to pieces, and my robo trying to get a better look at the action, instead of minding his nest.
