Frustrating Game Mechanics in MOBAs

22 April 2013 | 1 Comment » | iTZKooPA

When you’re playing an online game there are a few crucial systems under your control that you depend on for an enjoyable experience. Your computer, your Internet connection, your input devices (no batteries here!), they all have to be responding adequately or one may be thrown through the other. On the flip side, the company providing the experience needs dependable servers, few latency spikes and, naturally, compelling gameplay.

What if the gameplay itself becomes frustrating?

I’m not griping about a challenging boss fight, the umpteenth FedEx quest, an unusual balance change or an encounter so unique or gimmick-driven that it’s outside the cultural norms. I am referring to actual gameplay systems that cause active inhibitions. In an MMOG, you can brush a nuisance game mechanic off. There’s plenty of other content to chose from. Worst case, you have to wait for the next batch of content. In a MOBA, that’s not possible. Unless the character is modified it’s possible to come across the “broken” design at any moment. SMITE Gets Musical With Apollo, God of Music Jumping Into the Battleground of the Gods

28 March 2013 | No Comments » | Mordil

Hi-Rez Studios decided to take a break from love this patch, and moved into dedicating their lives to the beast of music. Apollo, God of Music, joins the Greek roster in SMITE.

Apollo’s skill set looks like a mixture between Neith, Thor, and Vamana. Rocking his ranged physical damage by shooting hand guns, this guy serenades, strums, and charges to victory.

Things to note in this patch:

  • A new ability item is being added: Portal - Using this item creates a portal entrance at your spawning location and a portal exit at your ground target. A player standing on the portal entrance will teleport to the exit, consuming both the entrance and exit in the process. Cooldown – 180s
  • Zeus gained more survivability as Aegis Shield now provides +20 more physical & magical protection at Rank 5.
  • Bastet gained some more mobility functionality with her Pounce ability.
  • Hide of Nemean Lion now reflects damage as magical damage, rather than physical damage.

After the jump, you can find Apollo’s God Reveal Video, text version of his abilities, and the patch notes. Continue Reading

SMITE Patch 0.1.1349 – Neith the Weaver of Fate, Removing Focus, and New Solo Practice

14 February 2013 | 1 Comment » | Mordil

Honestly, this week’s patch has been the first one I’ve been the most happy with since back in November.

Neith is one of the most balanced gods right at release – from what I’ve seen. She doesn’t do too much damage, and she’s about as easy to kill as other gods, even with all her utility. Focus is gone, with it’s somewhat clunky mechanic that was changed almost 3 times before being removed.

Along with Focus being removed, every god had a pass through by the designers to re-assign static values for stuns, slows, damage, speed increases, etc. that used to be scaled by Focus. The lengthy list is below, along with Neith’s God Reveal video, her abilities, and the generic balance changes.

Things of note to me were:

  • Hel’s abilities share half the CD time in both stances now (Her 1 in Healing Stance is used, both her Healing Stance and Damage Stance go on CD, with Damage Stance only being on CD for 1/2 the time)
  • Hercules’ “Earthbreaker” (knockback) ability had the length of its range reduced by about 10ft.
  • New Solo Practice Map for Arena: Ymir, Artemis, Ra, vs. Ymir, Artemis, and whomever you choose.
  • Advanced Tooltips have been added for abilities now.
  • and again, Focus has been removed.
Check out Neith’s reveal after the jump!

SMITE Moves Into Closed Beta Version 0.1.1215 – Jungle Nerfs, New “Domination” Game Mode, and God Banning

4 December 2012 | No Comments » | Mordil

Hi-Rez Studios has surprised me this time. Just two weeks ago, the company had a media exclusive stream on its Twitch channel previewing a new game mode in its early stages. Looks like someone decided to jump without looking, as Domination was added to the game in the latest patch, along with some interesting changes.

I played a few matches before writing this, and the changes, overall, feel very good.

One thing worth noting between Domination when I played it on the stream and now, is that you no longer need to stand on the sand dunes to capture the towers. As soon as you kill the enemy’s genie, your genie will appear to defend the point. It makes for faster gameplay, and better strategy, of no longer having the ability of “neutrality” before the enemy’s genie appears to sway the battle in their favor.

Below you can find the patch notes, and my thoughts on all the changes. Continue Reading

SMITE: Demigods, Deities and Gods Explained – Loki

6 November 2012 | 2 Comments » | iTZKooPA

SMITE: Demigods, Deities and Gods Explained is a column dedicated to introducing prospective players of SMITE to its massive back story of lore. From the Greek to Hindu, each week we’ll look at two characters from a major pantheon and provide a quick recap of their history and in what capacity their digital incarnation will represent on the field of Hi-Rez Studios’ upcoming MOBA.

Lore: Loki is arguably the best known antagonist of any pantheon. Rarely encroaching upon the gray area of good and evil, The Trickster is the recurring antagonist of the Norse pantheon. Originally a more neutral god, Loki sealed his fate as an evildoer when he arranged the death of Baldr. Capable of shapeshifting, the easier to deceive his prey, Loki has swam as a salmon, flown as a fly and walked the earth as an elderly women.

Loki was not highborn like some others of his repute. However, his seed was sown into history through the two-sided Hel, giant wolf Fenrir and the world serpent Jörmungandr. His laundry list of dastardly acts made his own entry into legend assured.

Hi-Rez Studios Announces the Next God in SMITE: Loki

31 October 2012 | No Comments » | Mordil

HiRez announced another god this morning, and it’s been the one I’ve been interested in since re-watching The Avengers just a week and a half ago: Loki.

This classical Rogue-esk character just might be up iTZKooPa’s alley.

They are eager to release this god, with the new game mode for SMITE which looks to be either Capture the Flag (I really hope so!) or a Deathmatch from the photo shared by HiRez today on Twitter shown to the right.

Here’s the video of their latest reveal; and continue reading for the text version of Loki’s passive and active abilities.

SMITE: Demigods, Deities and Gods Explained – Thor

SMITE: Demigods, Deities and Gods Explained is a column dedicated to introducing prospective players of SMITE to its massive back story of lore. From the Greek to Hindu, each week we’ll look at two characters from a major pantheon and provide a quick recap of their history and in what capacity their digital incarnation will represent on the field of Hi-Rez Studios’ upcoming MOBA.

Lore: To call Thor’s history well documented would do a massive injustice to the annals of history. Told, retold, modified for the culture of choice and ultimately made into a comic super hero, Thor’s legacy is perhaps without equal in today’s popular culture. In some respects, we celebrate the mighty Norse god every week with Thursday (Thor’s Day). And no, his beginning wasn’t humble by any means.

Fathered by the All-Father, Odin, the red-haired and red-bearded Thor is husband to the goddess Sif and lover to Járnsaxa. Between these two women, he is said to have fathered the potential valkyrie, Thrúd, and Magni, respectively. The god of thunder shares his fame with his powerful hammer, Mjölnir. Like many of his pantheonic relatives, Thor carries an assortment of named accoutrements, the belt Megingjörð, iron gloves Járngreipr, and the staff Gríðarvölr. Continue Reading

HiRez Studios Reveals New SMITE God: Thor, The God of Thunder

6 September 2012 | No Comments » | Mordil

Today, HiRez Studios made the announcement of the next playable god that will be added in the next build will be the Norse god of Thunder, Thor.

Being a fan of Thor, with the help of the Avenger’s movie series, I’m excited to try this god. His Ultimate looks a little over-powered with the distance he can jump, but it seems survivable. Looking closely at the video shows that his Ultimate does not offer Line-of-Sight, until he selects a location, or Line-of-Sight is already provided from Minions or Ally Gods(esses) .

His passive is called Warrior’s Madness which gives Thor +20 Physical Power for each enemy god within 30 feet, and stacks up to three times. Hit the jump for his official reveal trailer and a run down of abilities.
