The Novel Post: Vol’jin:The Judgment Review

28 April 2011 | 2 Comments » | pixiestixy

This review of Vol’jin: The Judgment by Brian Kindregan is of the spoiler-free variety.

I’ve always been a fan of the Darkspear Trolls, a bond that was strengthened further late in Wrath of the Lich King, in Patch 3.3.5 when Horde players got to participate in an epic event leading to Zalazane’s Fall and the retaking of Echo Isles.

But long before then, before Zalazane went crazy with power and betrayed his people, he and Vol’jin — who would eventually become Darkspear Cheiftan — were friends setting out on a journey to First Home. Their aim: to convene with the voodoo Loa spirits and receive judgment on their worth to become Shadow Hunters.

Blizzard recently posted Vol’jin: The Judgment as the newest edition of its ongoing Leaders series of short stories. At 22-pages long (in PDF format), it’s a quick read that gives some great, although tragic, context to how both Vol’jin and Zalazane were aimed down their respective paths. Personally, I prefer the web version over the PDF for the illustrations and easy-to-read colors — pick your pleasure. It’s no novel, but it is a good extension to the lore and fits well into our The Novel Post heading.

Rise of the Zandalari – Patch 4.1 Trailer Live

25 April 2011 | 2 Comments » | Heartbourne

The new trailer for patch 4.1 is now live. Check it out above.

The trailer details how the Zandalari trolls, who originally asked for players help to prevent Hakkar the Soulflayer from being summoned into the world, are now rallying the troll nations under a single banner to rebuild their kingdoms and retake lands lost in recent years.

Vol’jin of the Darkspear refuses the offer, as the Darkspear are members of the Horde and do not want to see more war, especially with the threat of Deathwing and the Twilight’s Hammer evident. Players of both the Horde and Alliance will work with Vol’jin and the Darkspear to stop the Zandalari’s plans.

Patch 4.1 “Rise of the Zandalari” Megapost

22 April 2011 | 3 Comments » | Amatera

Whether you need a refresher or just haven’t been keeping up with it, Blizzard has put up a full post detailing every nook and cranny of the upcoming content patch. Despite my current disappointment with the state of World of Warcraft, I can’t deny the fact that packing 4.1 with new features at least partially redeems the lack of a new raid dungeon (it certainly shows they’ve been working on something). Here’s a quick summary of what to expect, with the full notes on Blizzard’s site:

Rise of the Zandalari

The days when great troll empires stretched across ancient Kalimdor are long past. Millennia of war and internal strife have stripped these nations of their power, lands, and glory. As Azeroth recovers from the destruction of the Cataclysm, the world’s divided troll populations face a bleak future. These dark times have spurred the trolls of the Zandalar, the historically wise and scholarly tribe from which all trolls originated, to take drastic action. They have embarked on a bold crusade to save their race by uniting trolls into a single mighty empire. With the Zandalari’s aid, the fallen capitals of the Gurubashi and Amani nations—Zul’Gurub and Zul’Aman—are already rebuilding, replenishing their forces for a bloody campaign to expand their territories.

Yet Vol’jin and his Darkspear trolls are not aligned with the Zandalari. They have sworn to stand with their Horde comrades—and even work with the Alliance—should the trolls ignite a new war on Azeroth. Soon, Vol’jin might be forced to act on his promise, for if the Gurubashi and Amani are left to their own devices, the world will know the legendary strength and savagery of the ancient troll empires once again.

Guild Challenges

Built into the Info panel of the guild user interface, Guild Challenges are weekly tasks guild groups can tackle for additional guild experience, achievements, and gold. At the top of the guild user interface Info pane, a new Guild Challenges section is displayed and broken into three categories: Dungeons, Raids, and Rated Battlegrounds. Any guild group will qualify for Guild Challenges credit and there is a set number of times each challenge can be completed per week.

Guild Finder

Guild Finder is a new system designed to enable easier and faster guild recruitment. Guild leaders and players who are looking for a guild to call home will use the Guild Finder to meet one another and begin communications that can lead to a prosperous membership. Whether you’re a guild leader looking to fill your ranks or a player looking for a guild that meets your strictest requirements, the Guild Finder provides an easy way to make new friends!

Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms

A new system intended to lower queue times, Dungeon Finder: Call to Arms offers additional rewards for queuing as the currently least represented role. To be eligible for the additional rewards you must solo queue for a random level-85 Heroic in the role that is currently being Called to Arms, and complete the dungeon by killing the final boss. Every time you hit these requirements (there is no daily limit) you’ll receive a goodie bag that will contain some gold, a chance at a rare gem, a chance at a flask/potion, a good chance of receiving a non-combat pet (including cross faction pets), and a very rare chance at receiving a mount

Clearly the most important thing, though, is that this is a good indication Blizzard is ready to release the patch itself. There is a high chance we will see “Rise of the Zandalari” this coming Tuesday.

Patch 3.3.5 May Land Today, Cataclysm Beta Soon?

21 June 2010 | 2 Comments » | Amatera

The Ruby Sanctum: Red Trees, Green Grass, And Phat Purple Lewts.

There are strong signs pointing towards Patch 3.3.5 going live today, slaking the thirst of parched raiders who have drained every last drop out of Icecrown Citadel and (quite likely) their guild in the process. The update, whose major features include the Ruby Sanctum raid and Real ID/Battle.net 2.0 integration, may not be much in the grand scheme of things, but it is something, right?

Also included in 3.3.5 should be the files for the upcoming pre-Cataclysm events which feature the Trolls and Gnomes retaking the Echo Isles and Gnomeregan, respectively. Both areas will be eventually be converted into new starting areas for those races once expansion time comes around.

Do remember the following (disappointing) fact:

In patch 3.3.5, we will be introducing our new Battle.net system, which opens up new communication options for World of Warcraft players and lays the groundwork for integration with future Blizzard games, such as StarCraft II. In order to ensure that the implementation of this major new system goes as smoothly as possible, we plan to release the patch to North American realms first, with Europe, Korea, and the region of Taiwan following approximately one week afterward…

…To help clarify and add to our original announcement, we want you to know that because we are delaying the release of patch 3.3.5 in Europe, Korea and Taiwan but not in the US, the Ruby Sanctum will not actually be open on our US realms when the patch is released over there.

We will keep you updated on when we plan to open the Ruby Sanctum and any other necessary information.

Yeah, sorry I got you all excited. You’ll have to wait on Halion and co. for at least another week.

Infinitely more interesting is the idea that the Cataclysm beta may be coming “very soon,” word that comes from right from a semi-official source. Discounting the fact that he may be far removed from the actual decision-makers, a blue poster working for Blizzard Taiwan had the following to say today:

Wow! Now that’s some incredible news! Wait, what? You can’t read the divine language of our new Taiwanese overlords?! Alright, here’s one translation (hint: not mine, but cleaned up a bit):

So far, no effort has been made to discount the statement, but it’s still a little early in the morning over here on the Pacific Coast, where most Blizzard employees live. One thing to note, though it’s unlikely to impact anyone reading this, is that Taiwanese players would, in fact, have to download the US client to participate. Still, 6/23, huh? The implication seems to be that’s some sort of cut-off date for beta eligibility, and I doubt it’s only for Taiwan.

The Beta Test will start very soon. (How soon? I can’t tell you the exact time but… it’s very soon!) You can download the Cataclysmclient from your Battle.net Beta interface at that time, so you don’t need to download the US client right now. Another reminder, we haven’t received the confirmation email from quite a number of players. If you do not send us the confirmation email by 6/23 (Wed), your qualification for Beta will be passed on to other players.

With updates to the alpha client coming more and more frequently, I’m inclined to accept this as truth. If you haven’t yet applied for beta testing or uploaded your current computer specs, I’d log on to your Battle.net account get on that, or else all your beta-having friends in the coming months will laugh at you.

Zalazane’s Fall Previewed by Blizzard

9 June 2010 | 1 Comment » | Juggynaut

A few weeks ago, Blizzard released a nice bit of RP behind Operation: Gnomeregan in which High Tinker Mekkatorque called for the retaking of the Gnomish capital city. Now the similarly displaced Troll leader Vol’jin has begun calling for an assault on the Echo Isles, homeland of the Horde’s Darkspear trolls. The events, both of which have been covered from the PTR here on Lore Hound, are part of the pre-Cataclysm launch festivities, and explain how each of the two races get its own starting area once the expansion comes out.

Both events have been previewed in Azeroth Bulletins released by Blizzard that add some flavorful RP to the announcements. Each event announcement has included a beautiful poster, suitable for hanging right above your shrine to all things WoW. Experiencing the events is sure to be a memorable part of gearing up for Cataclysm.

The only thing that might make them better is if the announcements were actually done through in-game means. Receiving in-game Azeroth Bulletins teasing the beginnings of the event would be great. Finding these posters around each faction’s cities (or even in Dalaran) and seeing the leaders actually begin planning the assaults would be spectacular. It’s one thing to have an RP-style announcement on the website. It would be even cooler to know that players could expect NPC behavior to actually coincide with those announcements.

PTR 3.3.5: Retaking The Echo Isles, Part 1 — How Trolls Got Their Droods Back

29 May 2010 | 1 Comment » | Amatera

Finally, the Troll story moves forward. Vol’jin is taking charge, doing more than just keeping the Warchief’s chambers cozy while the rest of the Horde goes out to knock some heads. The events to come will throw the entire faction into unrest, so the Darkspear are in desperate need of a place to call home. That and, well, it’s just about time that they took back the Echo Isles anyway.

The questline, which culminates in the final defeat of evil Hexmaster Zalazane, begins on the edge of Sen’jin Village. While not the most difficult set of tasks put forth in the game (and they’re intentionally designed so a wide range of people can accomplish them), they’ll take you about 30-45 minutes to complete. I’ve tried to cut up the segments as much as possible so that you don’t have to deal with too much of the running-around bits, but the result was still lengthy enough to split up into two videos.

This first half, which follows, deals with everything leading up to the actual assault, including how the Darkspear rediscover their Druid talents. Enjoy!

Fans of the special Undercity event from Wrath of the Lich King will enjoy the rest of the footage coming very soon. While you’re waiting, why not check out Juggynaut’s footage of Operation: Gnomergan?

Cataclysm Zones: The Echo Isles

28 April 2010 | 2 Comments » | Amatera

In order to make sure that everybody gets a fair shake in the early going, Blizzard is giving two of the game’s existing races their own, special starting areas. While not as elaborate as those of the Goblin or Worgen, of course, it’s still nice to see that they’re paying attention.

In the coming months, players will have the opportunity to retake the Echo Isles from the evil witch doctor, Zalazane. Nascent Hordies of the Orc and Troll persuasion already pass this area as the first questing hub outside of the Valley of Trials, but from Cataclysm onwards, it will be the exclusive 1-5 introductory area for the latter.

As a beginning Troll, no longer will you be burdened with the menial tasks of slaying scorpions or picking apples (though, I will miss slapping lazy peons upside the hide). Instead, you’ll be charged with protecting the Darkspears’ newly reclaimed land from deadly predators and the encroaching Naga, who regularly threaten its safety.

But that’s not all, because this mini-zone has been completely re-jiggered! New Troll outposts and buildings have appeared on the islands, along with bridges that connect the archipelago with the mainland (I can’t be the only one that hated swimming across the inlet for every quest). And it looks even sexier with the new Cataclysm water effects.
