Seems like it’s nothing but good news for Frogster and Runewaker Enterainment today, the publisher and developer behind the free to play MMORPG Runes of Magic. Not only did Runes of Magic win the ‘International Game of the Year 2009’ at the German Game Developer Awards, but it also announced that since the game launched earlier this year, Runes of Magic has surpassed more then 2.5 million registered players.
One thing to make clear is that “registered players” does not equal “active players”. However for a game that has only been out since March 2009, 2.5 million is pretty good, although I’d be interested to know what their active subscriber stats are.

I’ve been casually playing RoM for a little while now and find it pretty enjoyable. If you’re looking for an almost identical, but free experience to WoW, this is it. In fact, it innovates quite a few things that I disliked in WoW.
There are only two races, and the map isn’t that big, but it already looks like Frogster is planning to launch quite a few expansions.
