CCP is kicking off a new advertising campaign for Eve Online dubbed “Eve is real”. The campaign kicked off today with a new video called “I Was There” that shows an Eve player talking about an ambush against him and his corporation. It sort of reminds me of the Halo “Believe” campaign two years ago, which I thought was unbelievable even though I haven’t played a Halo game since the original.
The marketing campaign is just half of the full picture as CCP is launching a new site next week that is meant to chronicle the history of the Eve Online universe. From the obscure to the epic, the site will log images, videos, players stories even Tweets and will consist of 5 main categories, War, Exploration, Corp Recruiting, EVE is Real and Freestyle.
Those that decide to contribute will be paid with in-game money once certain goals have been reached.
Apart from the general internet fame you’ll be rolling in, we are also offering incentives to entice you into sharing your favorite moments. A large chunk of EVE is about cost benefit afterall. We’ll have community sharing goals that, when met, will unlock some Aurum for every single active player account. If you share even more, we’ll unlock more. It’s fairly simple. Click a few times, show us your cool shit and we’ll show you the money.
I have to say, even though CCP stumbles lately, this new initiative sounds fantastic and something that really only Eve Online could do. The vast majority of MMOs these days are setup on separate servers, so something like this wouldn’t even be possible without separating the site into server histories which waters down the entire point of it.
Kudos to CCP and I can’t wait to see the new site.
