Since Black Prophecy launched in North America about 2 weeks ago, I’ve been slowly leveling up my pilot, currently level 11, but realized a few days ago that I totally f*@ked him up. I ended up putting five skill points into two separate skills I’ve now realized my build doesn’t need.
As with any builds, you never want to waste points, otherwise you char will never reach it’s full potential. So it’s clear to me now that something needs to be done and I have three options.
- I can re-roll and just start over
- I can just continue playing and accept the fact my character won’t be as good as it should be
- Or I can buy the stat reset item in the item store
For me and any game with a stat reset item, the choice is pretty simple, pay the few bucks, reset your stats and save yourself hours of replay time. However as with many non-F2P MMOs, there is no stat reset option. Some games, I think Tabula Rasa, had a one time stat reset gift for players, but for most there is no reset possibility.
So what would you do, re-roll or continue?
I think the answer comes down to the type of player you are. I’m not one for having alt characters and have never created more than one for any MMO I’ve ever played because I don’t like replaying the game more than once. Obviously some games have different quest and starting locations based on what race you choose, but it’s still basically the same.
The only time I re-rolled a new character was with Warhammer Online when I switched from a healer to tank, but only because my healer was on a non-RvR server and I was only at lev 11. I don’t remember why I would ever select a non-PvP server, but I did and since transfers weren’t available yet, I had to re-roll.
With Black Prophecy, the game’s timer has me at about 16 hrs, so there’s no way I would re-roll and start over. If anything I would probably just quit if I felt my character was completely messed up, but good thing I don’t have to. Thank god for stat reset items.
I kinda like how STO lets you get a stat reset after you go p in in a major rank with is about every ten lvls. It really lets you reorganize if you want to try a different type of ship or a new style of play. City of heroes was the best in thet you could earn a stat reset a couple of times throughout your lvling. all games should have that option, but that doesn’t make money.
As for the main question, I guess it depends on how bad I’ve screwed up and how fun the game is to lvl. BP, as much as I enjoy the game play, is a grind. I was one of the early batch of EU testers, so I doubt I would ever restart the game again. How long it takes to lvl is also a factor. I could hit max lvl in rift in about a month, but that’s a game where I can buy skill resets in game (the way it should be).
Well, as a player since US Beta, I did the same thing, so don’t feel badly, you aren’t the only one. I was given, when the game launched, an opportunity to re-roll my toon for the game, so I decided to go ahead and just focus his weapon skills on mechanical as I started, and dump the concept of being a multi-role pvp (mechanical/explosive). Given that there is both PVP and PVE in the game, you will probably enjoy being able to loadout higher level weapons of various types, but on the other hand…
If you are at all like me and relish in the competition of player versus player combat, then focusing your skillsets such that you are going to be able to maximize a given weapon set effectively, I’d say re-roll. The prologue isn’t that long, and at level 11, you’ll reach that point in no-time flat.
If you’re wanting the same character name, this is my suggestion. Find someone you like in the game, that you trust. Ask them to mule (pack your important gear in their storage and hold, so long as they have room) the stuff you really want to keep (crafted engines, weapons, mods, blue prints, etc.) and then log out, create a new toon for whatever side…
When done with this, log out and back in, erase the original toon and then re-create the original after skipping the prologue. This starts you with level 6 skill points to build your character and you don’t have to grind through the prologue.
WARNING! Do not erase and rebuild your toon before creating an alt to unlock the ‘skip prologue’ feature. You need to make an alt to skip the prologue FIRST if that’s what you’re going to do. Otherwise, you’ll be starting all over at the prologue and likely your stuff will be sitting in your friend’s hold till you level through the prologue.
Aside from weapons, you want your hull and your cockpit to level the quickest, so I wouldn’t worry much over shields, or engines (as I understand it, engines don’t level fast or much over level 5 anyway).
Hope this helps.
Ultimately, it’s in how you play, and how attached you are to your name/character, and whether you enjoy pushing through the grind of making characters and various other factors. It’s all in how you enjoy your gaming.
