Browser based MMO market leader Bigpoint has just released some delicious news on Battlestar Galactica Online. Strap on your Cylon helmets and prepare yourself for what might possibly be the best free to play browser game out there. After some waiting, Bigpoint has finally decided to follow up on their original Battlestar trailer (that revealed almost nothing) with some new info that discusses how the game-play is going to work, what kind of customization the player is going to receive, how missions are going to be structured, and the purpose of experience and ranks. Now just because Battlestar Galactica Online (BGO) is a browser game does not mean you should turn your back quite yet.
Let me start off by saying that this is the BEST looking browser game that we have seen to date. No other browser game can top the next gen graphics of BGO, and Bigpoint knows it. Heiko Hubertz who is the CEO and founder of Bigpoint, starts off by saying that “Bigpoint’s goal is to raise expectations on what can be achieved in a browser-based game,”. Heiko explains that he understands just how big of a universe Battlestar is and he is fully prepared to be able to bring that whole experience to life. Bigpoint has even teamed up with the creators behind the shows story to ensure that they can accurately portray important story elements and add new believable ones to the universe.
Let’s go over the customization that is available in the game. From the start of the game players will be able to choose to side with the Humans or the Cylons. Depending on which they choose, a rookie pilot will be created. Players will be able to customize their pilot completely as soon as they start the game. You, the player, will be able to outfit and upgrade your avatar with combat enhancements called “systems”, as well as new ships and ship parts. Your avatar will be used in “out of ship” game-play only. These game-play moments take place in your home base where you will be able to pick up new missions and outfit your character.
As for the missions, Bigpoint tells us that there will be two types of missions featured in Battlestar Galactica Online. The first type of mission a player can receive is called an assignment. These are general quests given out by NPC’s at you factions home base. You can complete these quests on your own time, and will receive standard rewards such as experience and items. The second mission type is called a story mission. These missions are selectable from your factions fleet leader once you have reached a certain rank. These missions will help advance the story and will award the player with greater loot. Things like extra experience and items can be earned, as well as new ship parts and advanced systems. The player is also capable of completing daily missions and/or duties. If a player successfully completes a duty mission, then the player will be awarded with achievements, which you can then equip to yourself to provide bonus stats and advantages. Just remember, when choosing an achievement to place on your character, choose wisely because you will only be allowed to equip yourself with one at a time.
As for the player ships in BGO, there are three weight types and three ship classes. Ships can come in a small, medium, or large scale (depending on your progress) and can be assigned to either the offensive, defensive, or command class. Your ships can be outfitted with the systems that you collect which also come in a small, medium, and/or large scale. You will have to then insert specific systems into their corresponding slots. Each system either falls under the weapon, hull, engine, or computer class and must be equipped accordingly. Players will always be given the freedom to choose which type of ship they would like to use, and which type of systems they want to equip. You will never be restrained into a certain ship class or size (although it will be the players responsibility to bring certain equipment for specific combat situations).
As you can see, Bigpoint has got a lot of great features planned out for this upcoming free to play MMO. We should here some more news about beta testing in the near future, so keep your eyes open and never doubt the power of browser gaming!
