E3 2010: Marvel Super Hero Squad Online

Another E3 MMO that has touched down is Marvel Super Hero Squad Online(MSHSO)-  a kid-centric browser-based MMO published by Gazillion Entertainment.

Marvel Super Hero Squad Online will feature dozens of all your favorite Marvel characters including Spiderman, The Thing, Iron Man, Storm, Hulk and Wolverine. There are villains galore as well like Dr. Doom, Green Goblin and Dr. Octopus.

Questions have been asked whether the popular Deadpool will be a playable character. The official response was, “I can neither confirm nor deny whether or not Deadpool will be in the game.”

Unlockable content is another big part of MSHSO. Players will uncover additional playable characters and additional costumes as they progress. Director of Games at The Amazing Society (where the game is being developed) noted that there are at least 6 or 7 different Iron Man suits alone spanning his entire career as a super hero.

MSHSO runs on the popular Unity engine and requires only a small download before playing. The graphics are full-3D including such neat traits as object-specific shading. Overall, graphics and art direction have been noted as being “Saturday morning cartoonish.”

Game play is a simple affair with a basic point and click system. Click right to attack and build up energy, left clicking releases the energy and a more powerful special move.

Instancing is accessed throught the user interface and can be played solo or with a group. No single instance takes longer than 20-30 minutes to complete consisting of a few zones and a boss encounter.

MSHSO has been in development over a year and is scheduled for an early 2011 release. Although some fans have been weary of the kid-centric approach the game boasts, initial looks at the game make it look like a promising title that will satisfy any Marvel fans quota of super hero inspired gaming.

Uh, it’s Marvel Super Hero Squad. They were expecting, what, John Constantine?

  2. Haha, good point NBarnes. I was more trying to state the fact that fans might be disappointed that the licensing for Marvel is being used for a kid-centric project rather than a more adult game.
