I’ve always been fascinated by Eve, but have never given it a try. I simply sat across the bar, eyeing it. Occasionally it looked back flirtaceously, but neither of us ever worked up the gumption to approach the other. Yesterday, I broke that standoff. I gave the game a whirl, and spent a few hours in scattered small doses across the day floundering in the wide, wide world of Eve Online. As if to reward me for the effort, there was a somewhat sizable patch this morning, bringing with it an entirely revamped new player experience. There is also stuff for experienced players, as the devs work on balancing alchemy, ships, and bring in new rigs. If I’d known this was happening, I might have waited a day and floundered a little bit less! But who am I kidding … If I’d known this was coming I’m more likely to have spent more time in game yesterday, trying to get through as much of it as possible before it was changed for the better. I’m just a glutton for punishment.

Ever wanted to try Eve, but thought it looked a little too intimidating? If so, you’re not alone. Eve is known for its high learning curve, and the devs finally decided to work on that. Today’s patch brings with it a lot of changes that are intended to make learning how to play the game a lot more accessible. The intro missions have all been given a makeover; mission descriptions, instructions and even the UI have all been reworked with new players in mind. With all this plus continued graphical updating, there’s no better time to try it out. Some of the new features include:
- Tutorial revamp for a more accessible new player experience
- New mission overlay for easier mission interaction
- 9 new alchemy reactions
- New rigs

I will soon be adding a new weekly series to LoreHound – my adventures in Eve! Be sure to keep an eye out for it, as I creep my way through the universe. I wonder how long it’ll be before I lose my first ship?
