Every once in a while I tend to go out on a tangent and write a post that’s not MMO related. Today is another one of those days.
Yesterday I finally got a chance to watch the new Stargate series called Stargate Universe. Now before I get into it allow me to give you some background on my SG experiences. I’ve only seen the movie once, thought it was ok, and never watched more than 5 mins of any of the previous series cause they looked cheesy as hell, Power Rangers cheesy. So you can call me a Stargate noob since I don’t really know any of it’s history. But I do love me some good sci-fi and since it looked pretty good in the commercials I thought I’d give it a try. On another note, I’d say Battlestar Galactica was my favorite series of all time so I was hoping that SGU would be its replacement show. Apparently not.
The show starts off interesting enough, then flashes back to show us how everyone got there. This is where we’re introduced to Eli, a pudgy gamer who happens to be a genius and solves a mathematical proof while playing some sort of video game. This was the first tipoff that the shows was going to be horrible. Who the hell wrote this? Some Stargate fanboy high school dropout gamer? I’m sorry, but solving a mathematical proof in a video game is not possible. Forget about the logistics of how you would even go about integrating a extremely complex math problem into a graphical video game, but how the f*ck would the game know that the answer is right if it was never solved in the first place. Seconds after he solves it the doorbell rings and we see a guy in a military uniform and are introduced to Rush, the genius mathematician that wasn’t smart enough to solve the equation himself, but smart enough to integrate it into a video game. Hmm, maybe if he didn’t spend all his time doing that he could have actually solved it himself.
The conversation that follows was so ridiculous I started to think maybe the show was going to be a comedy spoof of Stargate. Sadly it is not.
After being beemed to a spaceship that’s orbiting Earth, he meets some other people and is then beemed to another planet where the military is working on a Stargate they found. First of all, what year is this? Is SGU supposed to be present day? The video game he was playing sure looked it it. Do people know about the space ship or the other planet? Nothing was explained which would have been very helpful.
If everything was a secret, then the show can just end now cause it’s a huge pile of crap. Why the hell were there civilians everywhere if it was a secret? Why would you invite a Senator and his daughter? Oh, she’s your assistant, ok, here’s access to top secret information about our space ships and colonization of an alien planet. But it’s ok, she’s your assistant and daughter.
Seriously WTF is wrong with the writers.
Next there is an attack on the planet where the Stargate is by some unknown alien race. Again I don’t know anything about how Stargates work, but the reactor that generates power for the Stargate was damaged in the attack and when it blew up the entire planet exploded. Can someone explain this to me? Can someone please explain to me how a reactor that is so powerful that it can blow up an entire planet is so ill protected that a few attackers with laser missiles can blow it up. Maybe there was an external exhaust pipe that lead all the way to the core and one of the alien attackers used the force to get a direct hit. Come on, that was ok 40 yrs ago, but not today.
The stupidity continued after all the survivors from the military base jump into the Stargate to end up on some alien ship that has been traveling for millions of years without any crew. Aside from Eli bugging the sh#t out of me with his “humor”, I didn’t understand why everyone was mad at Rush. Did I miss something? It seems like everyone jumped through the Stargate, then everyone was mad at him because he spoke first.
More stupid sci-fi cliches continued as you had Rush and Eli reading and being able to use alien computers without the slightest knowledge of what they were actually doing. I’m sorry, but it takes me a few mins to figure out a Mac yet alone a computer thats 100 million years old, but it’s ok Eli’s good at vidoe games.
As the series opener I don’t think it could have gone worse. They need to kill off Eli and fire the writers if they want to save this show, the’re both terrible. Considering just how horrible the writing was, I actually think everyone aside from Eli did a pretty decent job, but still the series opener for Stargate Universe sucked.

1. The embedded math problem – that’s god damned stupid, entire Eli character is awful too
2. Yes, SGU is present day. In previous series humanity made enormous advances in technology and started off-world colonisation, there are many miliatary bases with civilian science staff. It’s overlook by some shady branch of UN I think.
3. Attack on the planet was just a plot device – they could be keeping low profile though. Also, even with all the cool spaceships humans have they’re still outnumbered and have limited resources.
4. Dr Rush is sort of an asshole. He doesn’t communicate well with the rest of the stranded people and lots of things about him are pretty sketchy. Did he really talk to authorities on Earth? We don’t know.
I hope they remove Eli. He’s there for comedic relief provided by “genious” characters of other Stargate series (like McKay in Atlantis) but it’s so obvious what they’ll be doing with him plot-wise it’s already boring and uninteresting.
Hope this clears up stuff a bit. There’s some things they should introduce to new audiences early on but I think it’ll be fine in the long run.
Signed,
SG fan :)
Kinda makes me feel a little better considering I’m not able to watch the show here :)
To be fair coming into a programme like SG:U cold after there has been 210 eps of SG1 and another 5 seasons of SG:A plus 2 new films, (so a fairly well established canon, and explanations i can assure you to most of those questions) and then be upset that you don’t understand everything about everything right away seems a tad short sighted.
Don’t get me wrong, there were bits I find stupid eg the resurfacing of the constant ridiculous concept hollywood/tv has about videogames but i imagine that’s pretty much the last time that particular deus ex machina will be used so get over it.
as for wanting it to be the new bsg, remember you went into bsg with it having essentially a blank slate to work from. Stargate has a dedicated fan base at its core it cant afford to lose by discounting the past 15 years of programming. its gone in a new direction and i think thats good and healthy and it’ll obviously have some teething problems. as most new series do. so chill out. we get it. its not for you. my recommendation, i’d give it a few eps to settle in.
also, nice to see a mature approach to immediately deriding the longest running sci-fi as crap and cheesy as hell when as you previously stated you’ve never watched more than 5 mins of any of it. thats a very open mind…. even by the internets standard
You obviously don’t know much if anything about the Stargate series. Much of which you had no clue about would explain the issues you had.
Did you even listen to the episode? The planet itself was the generator for that Stargate. It was unstable, the attack caused it to overload…
So I guess you might want to actually watch at least few episodes before you claim the show sucks for reasons that are known to people whom have seen even a few of the series episodes.
my recommendation, i’d give it a few eps to settle in.
also, nice to see a mature approach to immediately deriding the longest running sci-fi as crap and cheesy as hell when as you previously stated you’ve never watched more than 5 mins of any of it. thats a very open mind…. even by the internets standard
Couldn’t have said it better……
I don’t know whether to pity you or just despise you.
A dude in a military uniform? Its Jack O’Neill you twat! The central character of the whole Stargate Universe.
Talk about BlogFAIL.
Go back to your ‘God did it’ shoddy BSG remake.
I thought Stargate:U was meh. Reminded me too much of the opening of Atlantis cept Atlantis gave us that waste of film Teyla…Universe gave us a geeky fat prick Jewish looking MMO player that can suddenly outsmart geniuses and of course gets whisked away across the galaxy to ‘help out’ a special top secret project, I can imagine the use of hand cream and sanitary wipes in the MMO community just went through the roof and more than a few new keyboards were purchased the next day.
As I said, its Meh compared to Sg1 (Up to Season 8), but even half arsed new Stargate is better than no new Stargate.
“Every once in a while I tend to go out on a tangent and write a post that’s not MMO related.”
Please stop doing that if this is the level of research you do for articles like these. Mmocrunch Massive Fail – indeed.
I’m a long time fan of Stargate. Loved it since the movie first came out, I’ve seen every episode of Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis.
I also read all the blogs posts from this blog, thanks to Google’s RSS reader.
Despite Mike not fully understanding the episode due to no previous Stargate knowledge, I have to agree with him that Stargate Universe was pretty bad.
This is coming from a big Stargate fan along with being a huge Battlestar fan.
I could go into details as to why I think it sucked, but I don’t even want to waste my time doing that.
@Rodney , anon
Having no previous knowledge of Stargate should not affect whether a new series is good or not. I hate to tell you but your are not SGU target audience, you’re already SG fans, and going to watch the series regardless.
People like me on the other hand are, someone thats heard of SG but never watched before. If they want to try to grow SG’s fanbase they are doing a pretty horrible job by not explaining anything.
BSG intro episode pretty much told us new viewers everything we needed to know about BSG to watch the intro episode, while SGU told us nothing and I was lost.
Yes, Im going to get it another episode or 2 before I completely write the show off as crap, but for a 90min series opener is was terrible.
You are a fool! You’re giving a pan to a show you know nothing about by your own admission, and you only watched 5 minutes of it…..what a jerk!!!!!!
Great show fantastic acting!
The first three shows are the setup, introducing the characters and situations. Maybe you should shut your mouth and open your eyes and ears before you say another word about something you know nothing about!
I Hated watching Eli as he’s a no-talent hack at best and a dam fat, ugly piece of crap for sure. He has no wit or intelligence about him and thankfully I was abelt to fast-forward on my Tivo.
I also hated watching the General’s daughter as she also had no talent and was painful to look at and listen too.
The overall story concept is awlful and about as bad as Battlestar Galatica. I have absolutely no plans to every watch another episode of SG-u, wonder if they would bring back most of the cast from Stargate Atlantis?
I agree that the target audience was supposed to be “new” to stargate viewers, mostly. The creators of the show pretty much said that, but they also wanted to retain their main base. I think they did a poor job trying to get both because problems like what I am seeing on these postings arise.
The new people to Stargate can’t understand it because there isn’t enough explanation, and the old viewers won’t want to watch a show that rehashes what they’ve seen and known for 15 years.
They started out with a loser if their goal was to please both audiences. I personally am a fan of Stargate and there were some things that didn’t make sense even if you’ve seen all 200+ episodes and the movies. Hope it gets better, or I’m not tuning in.
Sorry, it’s 300+ episodes. I was just thinking of SG-1 at first, but Atlantis has 101.
The show is awesome aside the gamer dude he just does not belong there but don’t shoot it down in the first five seconds give it a few episodes and then if u don’t like is say what u want.
for all u ppl whom like to complain that its focused to much on old veiwers ther is goin to be a new enemy new characters and a new plot most of the references to old shows wont be acted on so u wnt be to confused also i watched 4 or 5 episodes of bsg an just didnt find it interesting at all
Wow. That is all I can say to such a STUPID AND UNINFORMED response Mike. I cannot explain how ridiculous your posting is.
FAIL on your part.
Its just so surprising to see people say that I don’t know anything about Stargate and my post in uninformed. NO KIDDING. I never watched SG before, that was my point. The series explained nothing to someone that is new to the show.
If that was their plan to leave potentially new viewers in the dark, than they did a great job. Sorry fanboys, but the show was horrible.
I don’t understand why the stoped making stargate Atlantis they could have gone so many directions with that show the city was a ship and there was multiply others in Pegasus as well as Battle ships underwater stations research stations on other planets the only thing i had a real problem with was that they had a full data base at there disposal and never looked up how to make a zpm but that’s but mike like sgu its sifi it doesn’t have to be realistic that’s what fictions for stargate is the best series that television has ever produced its not for everyone but if they cancel this series they’ll lose my loyalty mike you should rent the stargat Atlantis series it will bring you up to speed and you’ll probably get hooked if you give it a fair chance
Eli should be killed off on this poor attempt. This is a failed attempt to fuse BattleStar with a Bizzaro version of Stargate. The Senator’s daughter blows big time! This show will completely floop if they dont do somethibg quick. So far less action than SG Atlantist which I tolerated a few. Somebody needs to hire some fresh blood from the fans as a consultant. The SGU fools figured they could put lipstick on a ugly pig and sell it to us a Paris Hilton. I come from a time of Sterling, Rodenberry, early Lucas. SGU I sat with my Seven sons and they hated it! They hated Star Wars 1 and 2 but for good cause. What next SGU? You gonna bring in a “Chaca” for you kids he was a JarJar type mess in a show from times past!
1)how do you know when a mathematical equation is solved?
it is solved when the left part equals the right part of the ” = ” …. seems easy ennough to implant some equation into anything really
2) as it is the THIRTH series of the franchise, maybe they did expect you to know at least basics about the stargate, like what year it is, the basic technologies they have acquired, etc
3) so because SOME civilians work at the stargate program , it can’t be a secret operation… this doesn’t even make sense…
4) it was explained that the planet exploded because of the “naquadria” in the planet, a very powerful mineral that is used to power up the gate, overload the naquadria and it explodes, taking the planet with it
5) you didn’t get why they are mad at rush ? really if you want to watch something at least try looking and listening to it… he stopped them from dialing earth ( getting safely to home ) and instead he dialed some unknown ship… what is so hard for you not to get this
6) they can read it because it is “ancient” technology … it was said in 1 of the videos that there was an ancient race … called the “ancients” … one of the first things they said was ” yep… definitely looks like ancient-technology ”
and they have been able to work with ancient technology for years
you didn’t like the other stargate series… you don’t like this 1… but atleast don’t give so many unrelevant reasons
epic fail
if not legendary
but nice to see sgu not working for stargate noobs as it was supposed to
I’m a long time fan of the SG series and you obviously have no concept of what a good Sci-fi series is. How can you even call yourself a scifi fan when you dare to call the SG1 and Atlantis series crap. A series thats been showing for over a decade and has pushed the limits of what is capable for CG in tv and set the standards worldwide. And you dare to call it crappy and cheezy like power rangers. They aren’t even on the same level.
Perhaps before voice your opinion you should realize that this is a spinoff series of the previous series. So maybe you should watch those series before you start commenting on the new one. Get a little knowledge into the story first. You can’t be expected to know everything that’s going on. Like reading ancient technology for instance. That is a given, these people are trained to be able to read this stuff. They are experts in this field. If you’d watched the previous series you’d know that. So with that said, your obviously not the target audience.
As for newcomers to the show, your expected to watch the previous series to know whats going on or just try to figure out whats going on and melt into the story.
BSG was a remake of an original by the way, not a new series.
I am a very loyal and keen fan of the SG franchise.
Just watched the first 3 episodes of SGU.
It was awful
I think they are on a hiding to nowhere with this program
All the characters are extremely unlikeable..I wouldn’t mind if they all got killed off.
First 3 episodes nothing happened..seriously boring
Previous poster pretty much summed it up when he referred to putting a fat ugly gamer in charge of a military recon.
The producers are Morons…they cancelled SGA for this!!!!!
Eli actually has created excitement for us SG1 loyalst. We keep on hoping he will get killed off! The only way Eli could have made the cut is if he somebody’s fat son who owns SCIFY. SFiFY must assume that all geeks are fat and triple large pizza ordering hogs. What will you do SGU? I figure they have their own people trying to write on Blogs and other iContent to bolster their popularity. Tell me what you all thought of Part 2. Did it live up to your failed or lowered expectations or not? Did Ely drive you nutts? Did the angry black stereo type soldier(You know the voice from Halo which is cool!)? Now in order to appease the growing gay community we have some Lesibians I am told on this show? Is SGU here for the Geeks, Nerds or Science Fiction addicts? What do you think? If so why are the attempting to draw us away from the show?
There is a reason why stuff like doors and mugs maintained the same basic shaped over thousands of years:
They just work.
And SGU doesn’t work. It was working, now it doesn’t, because someone in a board room decided he has to prove himself by being totally different.
I still had hope after ep1 and ep2, but after watching ep3, that hope is gone.
I’ve looked everywhere and the only defence the supporters of SGU can come up with is “they’re trying something new”
LOL, the problem was never “trying something new”, the problem is they killed SGA so they can use try this piece of crap attacged to the stargate brand.
This is the equvalent of FIFA changing the football rules, forbid running and allow players to use their hands at all times in the next worldcup.
There’s nothing wrong with the rules themselves, but if you destroy what was good and replace it with something totally lame, you will be ridiculed.
SGU is now the offical soap opera for gay and lesbians.
Hi All
I have loved SG1 and liked most of Atlantis – have both on DVD and am a huge fan of the Stargate Franchise. I was really loking forward to SGU but I have to say what a let down. The two part pilot was boring, the characters just not engaging and the whole story / premise seems flawed to say the least. Both pilots for SG1 and SGA were great – they were fast faced, the characters instantly made you want to watch, they had humour and action and were well written. This show seems to want to use the name “stargate” but that seems to be a ploy just to get ratings – definitely not a good show but I wanted to watch episode 3 first to give it a fair trial – I did and I’m still disappointed. I’ll give it a few ore episodes but they need to sto taking themselves so seriously – that was the good thing about SGA and SG1, serious but didn’t make itself dark and menacing and had good humour thrown in. back to the drawing board !
You should watch the whole first part of SG1 before you judge it to be cheesy as hell. You are way to critical!
That the producers chanceled SGA is difficult to understand though.
The third part of SGU was maybe not so good. I hope that it will get better since some of the characters are interesting. I want to know more about how they will manage on that ship!
“beemed”???
No…seriously.
“beemed”??????????????
SGU, this show sucked when it was called Star Trek: Voyager.
SGU in nothing but a whining bickering space opera. A total disappointment..
With no hurry I watched it just before this review.
All I can think about it when Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons says
“worst series ever”
I REALLY want to hurt somebody for SCREWING up Stargate.
*NO actual physical threat intended
cudmaster nailed it – StarGATE Voyager sucks just as much as StarTREK Voyager.
and I could even put up with the lame characters if the show wasn’t so damn boring!!! I found myself hoping that the Wraith would show up and suck all the life out of them, and then I realized that apparently this has already happened.
Even though you are obviously not a fan, and therefore got a bit confused by the lack of details, which were actually given in the opener or in previous episodes of SG1 and SGA, admittedly it was cheesy and WAY OVERLY DRAMATIC.
I have seen every episode of Stargate multiple times, but after four episodes of SGU, I find it to be the crappiest opening to a show in a long time. If it wasn’t for the presence of a space ship, I would swear I was watching “The Days of Our Lives”.
All I can say is this show may be about the characters more as they were trying to sell it, but it is WAY to overly dramatic. Dr. Rush is just ridiculous. All the screaming, ranting and growling at everyone is really just getting old already.
Stargate Universe is just too similar to Star Trek Voyager and Battlestar Galactica for me. It has the same plot as voyager, with the same overly dramatic cheese of Battlestar Galactica. With a touch of soap opera to just put it over the edge…
So far this show is an absolute disgrace to the Stargate name, and if it doesn’t improve I am sure we will see it being canceled soon enough.
Hopefully it changes soon, because I was really looking forward to another Stargate series, but just not like this…
Your issues with SGU are mostly untrue. It wouldn’t matter if a mathematical proof was solved or not, it could still be integrated into a video game. After all, you can put anything in a video game–you should know this! I’m not a math professor, but I know that there has to be some way to tell if the solution you come up with is correct or not. How would anyone ever solve a math problem if you couldn’t tell if your solution was wrong or not?
How could they be able to use all the alien equipment when they’ve never used it before? They’ve studied it, that’s how. The kid had experienced it from what the government put in the video game, and the doctor has obviously studied it extensively. Just because you can’t figure out how to use a Mac doesn’t mean everyone can’t. Some people are just smarter than you.
I’m not a fanboy. Sure, I watched the movie and a few of the series’ episodes, but they weren’t good enough to make me want to watch every single one. I watched one episode of Atlantis before I realized I DO NOT WANT.
I can’t say I’ve ever watched Battlestar Galactica. The commercials just never caught my attention, and it looked like I would have to watch it from the beginning to have any idea of what was going on. So by your standards, I could say that BSG had bad writers.
I can see how no one would even read this article if they weren’t a stargate fan.
The facts are that everything Stargate sucks. Seriously, it’s awful trash and an embarrassment to science fiction. The idea for the story isn’t bad, what’s bad is the acting and the people who write the shows.
Stargate universe sucks big time, what a disappointment, i’ve watched 5 episodes, wish i
could take back that wasted time.
Well overall i have to say that i was really thrilled to see a new stargate show. it seemed to be a truly great and logical idea to switch to a spaceship-environment with a forced timeframe to explore different planets. this would enhance the possibillities even more.
well, as thrilled as i was when i was tuning in for the pilot…. so deeply disappointet i am after trying to FORCE me through all 5 episodes so far.
i am really sorry, i should represent the segment of people the show was initially aimed at. i loved BSG and i like dramatical character driven shows like ..let’s say, house and so on. But all these shows are pretty much unike in their feels. Including Stargate with all its Movies and tv shows until now.
I feel a bit embarrased that this is named stargate. and i think the producers and directors, which i..just for the record, really like (they are great guys!), should be embarrased too. because what they came up with, is not working as it should. actually it is a lot worse than that. it is setting fire in all the stargate communitys.. you can read it all over the internet. I estimate that at least 70% of regular stargate viewers wich liked any sg show before are really dissappointed with the overall style of this show.
It is wayyyyy too cheesy… too much lovestory (90210 in space.. literally!), absolutely unrealistic use of recources.. for e.g. the comunication through the ancient devices. They could just swap the stupid crowd with the best and brightest airforce can offer!! And its Over the top ridiculously dramatic. But what hurts most is that its plain boring over long distances. In the face of death, instead of pulling together and work the problems they fight against each other and they are banging each other. No body trusts the guy next to him. It is absolutely PAINFULL to watch most of the characters interact. It is so fucking embarrassing!
Damn it’s really a shame that they haven’t tried something more subtile before they pushed full throttle ahead for the “ReallityTV/MTVdatingshow/i sold my wife for a new flatscreen and married a whore”-audience
What a load of blended crap.
The only guy you can really enjoy is ELI. Colonel Young the doc and carlyls character, rush, they have great potential. Robert Carlyl is GREAT! I hope they try a 180 degree turn. and fast please. because if i have to watch ONE more single random lovescene with random guys and random blabla instead of problemsolving in a show called stargate.. then i’m afraid i have to puke in a envelope and send it to MGM. If they are not bankrupt by then which i would really appreciate by now…… cheers
I only have three comments about SGU.
1. Hire some decent writers quick.
2. Hold the effing camera still for heavens sakes! It looks like the camera operator is on crack and it’s giving me a headache.
3. Sex does not belong in Stargate. If I want to see sex, I will watch a porno.
I actually agree with Mike.
I have seen all the Stargate episodes and films and though I’m a big fan of the Stargate Mythology I think SGU absolutely sucks.
I never been a big fan of the writers of Stargate, always thought they never fully fulfilled the potential of the whole story of Stargate … but is really pathetic.
The show is so not original … lifesupport malfunction, powerloss, waterproblems, all so typical … so far there’s hasn’t been any spark whatsoever.
The only reason I’m still watching is because I want to know the purpose of Detiny, where’s it headed, why did the Ancients launch it, …
As for the episodes, completely empty, no drama cause you already know what the solution eventually will be, no action, …. nothing!
The series suck ATM!!!!
guys… shut the hell up. This guy is 100% right. SGU is a PIECE OF SHIT. I am a hardcore SG fan, and i have all SG1 episodes on cds. (box set). I have watched most of atlantis episodes as well. But…
This show is a MAJOR disappointment from past series. They turned an incredible sci fi show into a Sy Fy soap Opera. A SOAP OPERA. Let that settle in for a minute.
This show is the worst. Im done with SGU. (took me 2 episodes).
I really enjoyed the SG-1 shows, and I always looked forward to watching stargate atlantis. I’ve watched three SGU episodes, and it’s getting more and more retarded. The latest episode was about how the ship was able to power itself by flying into the sun. Wtf, it doesn’t take an idiot to know that a sun is extremely hot and melts virtually anything that gets to close to it. Even “Rush” in the show pointed that out….
I have to agree with the above blog. This show is embarrassingly bad. Sci Fi has put out some crap before, but apparently they just like to keep raising the bar. The Flash Gordon series they produced was better than Stargate Universe.
I thought the new Battlestar Galactica was poop on a stick.
I saw someone mention that Stargate is the longest running sci-fi series? Doctor Who trumps it by well over a decade for just continued production. That is not including the new series.
The Stargate Movie was good. I hope they make a sequel that completely ruins the continuity of the lame-as-hell TV series that made Hercules the Legendary Journey’s look brilliant.
This shows is damn good are you retarded?
PAY ATTENTION!! half the stuff people talked about on here was addressed you must not be watching very closely.
every hard core SG fan i know is onboard.. you can nit pick the hell out of all of them if you want to.
it was not the sun it was stars. and ya since that idea is impossible lets throw in the entire SG series..
according to reviews you guys are all alone in your opinions.
STEVE is the only one that seems to have actually watched the show.
Okay some of us SG fans need to take a chill pill. I am a longtime SG Fan and can say without a doubt that SG:U is the biggest piece of crap having hit the small screen.
Some of you argue that they use the first few episodes as Setup, that this show is meant for the newer generation “who magically” are supposed to know half the Stargate Information out there. Wake up. The concept was interesting i gave it up until this latest episode (S01E07 Earth). The show is literally a sad soap opera that has gone too far into the politics and buerocracies of SG.
Character development is rather sad, quality of the acting is definitely sufficient the cast is not bad in fact they are capable of a lot more but come on… Unless they start getting their act together this will be a 1 Season appearance of SG:U. Even the SG Cartoon Show was more entertaining… and that … is saying a lot.
I allow for a lot of give when it comes to the show and its plot. The third episode of Air actually had me hoping and looking forward to the next episode about exploration of the ship and the different adventures that the crew could live through.
But after 4 more episodes about constant whining going home to “get laid” or chat with relatives or bosses, this show has lost a lot of stargate.
The actors I think are great btw however there seems to be some issues with how well the work out with one another, and i can only say that at this point 7 episodes in this is the dullest and unimaginative show i have ever seen, the whole show now is based on distrust and subversion of characters…
Being oblivious to these facts is one thing keep an open mind but don’t for one minute believe that just because this show carries the name stargate it has to be good… Which it definitely isn’t.
Here are my 30 Cents…
I think most of us agree this show SUCKS, we all hoped for the best saw the potential it had and thus are really pissed because this show is so god damn boring. There is no action, no chemistry, and while I watched the first 6 episodes waiting for something good to happen to justify the time I wasted nothing came of it. I tried to watch episode 7 but another let down and stopped watching it after 10 mins. SG1 and Atlantis had chemistry and action and while SGU has IMO great CG more money should have been invested elsewhere, um like acting, story plot. Oh well I am guessing Brad Wright is buying some new island with his new found wealth not giving a flying fuck that something he created is turning into a flaming bag of poo (maybe he thinks it will not reach him being a billion light years from earth). hrm… Maybe we could sue him for mental anguish? God knows I will NEVER get those hours back.. I would have better off watching reruns of Buck Rogers.. Ugh..
For those of you that don’t have the SG-1 box set …,
Richard Dean Anderson (McGyver) was interviewed as part of one of the special features. During the interview he explained how stargate was intelligent and that they didn’t want to dumb it down and insult the audience.
This is funny because despite Joseph Mallozzi’s claims that SGU is more mature, the fact is that SGU took the SCIENCE out of the SCIENCE FICTION and the show now caters to those who think whith their asses, and not their minds. Mallozzi, is, well .. a LIAR.
SGU’s reason for being is quite simple. It’s obviously cheaper to make than SG1 and SGA. It’s cheaper, and easier to make. Unfortunately, the show is now brain dead and won’t make it to 5 seasons. I would be surprised if it makes it 2.
You guys should check out Mallozzi’s rants on his blog. His panties are in quite a twist.
It’s a shame that his new series spits in the face of Richard Dean Anderson and all of the SG1 and SGA fans out there.
Shame on you Joe!
I am SO glad to see I am not the only person who thinks SGU sucks. SG-1, SGA were awesome. SGU is completely impossible to follow. Writers, producers-are you listening??? BRING BACK ATLANTIS!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!
Stargate Universe sucks! It is more like a cheesy soap opera with lesbians and all, it is truley GAY!
SGU puts brings shame to the awesome SG1 and SGA series.
SGU – SUCKS!
OK….unlike most of the Stargate fans, I’m kinda new to Stargate. Didn’t really watch any of it until the last year or so on reruns. (great way to get into a show….seeing it on a daily basis!) So…SG1 was created as a sci-fi light-hearted action series and worked very well as such. SG Atlantis was a bit more about people in stranger circumstances and how they grow either together or apart (take McKay and Sheppard, who would never have anything to do with each other in a normal world, but are close to being best friends in their world) Added to that would be the tension between civilian and military methods and objectives. The show was reasonably light-hearted though with good banter and comic relief. The new SGU is obviously set to be darker and attempting to build more tension between characters. The premise is obviously set less for cooperation and more for conflict between people who all have their own agendas (like BSG) And like BSG it will carry more of a “space opera” feel with unresolved endings that will keep coming to the surface. And as with BSG, I suspect you’ll either love it or hate it.
I am a sci fi and StarGate fan, really liked SG1, loved Atlantis. This SG Universe is total crap, it is a dam chick flick in disguise.
Totally dull, uninteresting, weak characters, they should ram the dam ship into a planet and get it over with !!
