Every once in a while I tend to go out on a tangent and write a post that’s not MMO related. Today is another one of those days.
Yesterday I finally got a chance to watch the new Stargate series called Stargate Universe. Now before I get into it allow me to give you some background on my SG experiences. I’ve only seen the movie once, thought it was ok, and never watched more than 5 mins of any of the previous series cause they looked cheesy as hell, Power Rangers cheesy. So you can call me a Stargate noob since I don’t really know any of it’s history. But I do love me some good sci-fi and since it looked pretty good in the commercials I thought I’d give it a try. On another note, I’d say Battlestar Galactica was my favorite series of all time so I was hoping that SGU would be its replacement show. Apparently not.
The show starts off interesting enough, then flashes back to show us how everyone got there. This is where we’re introduced to Eli, a pudgy gamer who happens to be a genius and solves a mathematical proof while playing some sort of video game. This was the first tipoff that the shows was going to be horrible. Who the hell wrote this? Some Stargate fanboy high school dropout gamer? I’m sorry, but solving a mathematical proof in a video game is not possible. Forget about the logistics of how you would even go about integrating a extremely complex math problem into a graphical video game, but how the f*ck would the game know that the answer is right if it was never solved in the first place. Seconds after he solves it the doorbell rings and we see a guy in a military uniform and are introduced to Rush, the genius mathematician that wasn’t smart enough to solve the equation himself, but smart enough to integrate it into a video game. Hmm, maybe if he didn’t spend all his time doing that he could have actually solved it himself.
The conversation that follows was so ridiculous I started to think maybe the show was going to be a comedy spoof of Stargate. Sadly it is not.
After being beemed to a spaceship that’s orbiting Earth, he meets some other people and is then beemed to another planet where the military is working on a Stargate they found. First of all, what year is this? Is SGU supposed to be present day? The video game he was playing sure looked it it. Do people know about the space ship or the other planet? Nothing was explained which would have been very helpful.
If everything was a secret, then the show can just end now cause it’s a huge pile of crap. Why the hell were there civilians everywhere if it was a secret? Why would you invite a Senator and his daughter? Oh, she’s your assistant, ok, here’s access to top secret information about our space ships and colonization of an alien planet. But it’s ok, she’s your assistant and daughter.
Seriously WTF is wrong with the writers.
Next there is an attack on the planet where the Stargate is by some unknown alien race. Again I don’t know anything about how Stargates work, but the reactor that generates power for the Stargate was damaged in the attack and when it blew up the entire planet exploded. Can someone explain this to me? Can someone please explain to me how a reactor that is so powerful that it can blow up an entire planet is so ill protected that a few attackers with laser missiles can blow it up. Maybe there was an external exhaust pipe that lead all the way to the core and one of the alien attackers used the force to get a direct hit. Come on, that was ok 40 yrs ago, but not today.
The stupidity continued after all the survivors from the military base jump into the Stargate to end up on some alien ship that has been traveling for millions of years without any crew. Aside from Eli bugging the sh#t out of me with his “humor”, I didn’t understand why everyone was mad at Rush. Did I miss something? It seems like everyone jumped through the Stargate, then everyone was mad at him because he spoke first.
More stupid sci-fi cliches continued as you had Rush and Eli reading and being able to use alien computers without the slightest knowledge of what they were actually doing. I’m sorry, but it takes me a few mins to figure out a Mac yet alone a computer thats 100 million years old, but it’s ok Eli’s good at vidoe games.
As the series opener I don’t think it could have gone worse. They need to kill off Eli and fire the writers if they want to save this show, the’re both terrible. Considering just how horrible the writing was, I actually think everyone aside from Eli did a pretty decent job, but still the series opener for Stargate Universe sucked.

This show has gone DOWNHILL. Long time viewer and owner of all SG-1 series and SG Atlantis series. What are you guys doing? I have seen increase in sex and homosexualism in this show. There is NO need for this in this show. No longer support or purchase anymore DVD’s of this show. NO LONGER a VIEWER of SGU. Removed it from my TIVO.
SGU review: 10 reasons Why Stargate universe sucks
SGU sucked so bad Gateworld is now screening critics and Syfy even turned off new account activation so I am now posting this all over the web.
1. Wrong name – should have called it “Lost Battlegate Atlantica’s Anatomy Voyager”.
2. Confusing – Scrambled the sequence with unnecessary flashbacks and cause confusion, this only works if there is a big mystery, not the 15 minutes tiny mystery in SGU (Trying to copy Lost)
3. Lacks originality – Tried too hard to please everyone and ended up being a pile of nothing. As if the writers are beginners writing their first show, copying a little bit from every popular shows out there and calls it a day.
4. Trying too hard – Unnecessary sex scene which had nothing to do with anything else and screams “me-too”, to think we’ll buy this crap just because you put it there is quiet insulting (Trying to copy Galatica)
5. Annoying – Way too much arguments, yes tension is needed between characters, but some idi0t decided it’d interesting for us to see people argue every step of the way (over common sense) from beginning to the end. Dude, just STFU and move on already.
6. Boring – Characters don’t stick, because they’re all average losers and a loud mouth, everyone hates loud mouths.
7. Shaky cameras – Dude, stay the **** still.
8. Careless – With plot holes the size of Texas.
9. Too greedy – Crossed the fine line between bravery and stupidity, introducing new stuff to reach wider audience is understandable, ditching everything that was good and piss off loyal fans to the brand itself is just plain stupid.
10. Bad acting – Soulless characters, cardboard acting, but what can you expect from a pilot with a lame script.
Obviously the guys running this project has the same mentality as the guys who renamed SciFi to Syfy (Syphilis) just to get paid.
Stargate UnYverse sucks.
If people want ice cream they get ice cream.
If people want steak they get steak.
Ice cream and steak don’t mix.

Please REAL character development ??? Unless your a 14 old teenager looking at seeing some soft porn and bad acting to boot there is no character development with Stargate Universe . From the episodes I have seen the characters are unlikable and provide no character development I mean do they expect us to start liking the characters after two whole seasons ???? With a show like this one which is going for less scifi feel with more adult content the character development would be the most important part to get right (EG: Battle Star Galactica did this right)and should come across in the first two episodes . The actors come across as unlikable and forgettable not to mention the bad acting . Plus the story’s are badly written re using old themes from various other shows and seasons with so many holes in the story’s it insults Stargate fans . This show will be lucky to see its second season I don’t know one person who likes this show . This was a quick attempt to grab ratings and the producers wh*ring the show out to make a quick buck .
The people defending this show are claiming that the SG1 SGA formulae was tired, and that the new fans of SGU ‘get it’ .. the old hard core fans don’t like it because they don’t like change.
Man … I tell ya .. i wanted change. I wanted the new SGU to be broad and intelligent .. to touch on great concepts , whether it’s moral issues, or technological ones. It was to be serious at times, it was to reflect on the human condition.
I expected some drama , meaning stressfull peace talks, officers forced to make tough decisions, officers killed in the line of duty … that kind of drama.
Unfortunately what we got was teenie bs drama, not enough action, no sense or progress or occasional closure.
It’s a soap in space, 90210 style with no substance whatsoever.
I wish that people who like the show could just admit that it’s too soapy.
I also wish that if the writters can do a better job of integrating more action and more science, that the SGU haters could accept a bit of drama … BUT NOT TOO MUCH .
A comfortable midle line to reign in the old fans as well as the new.
The show could be rescued. I have not watched the show since the fourth episode.
I will keep on reading reviews at IMDB hoping that season 2 will reconcile itself with the former glory of SG1 and SGA. Once it does that, I will watch it. Heck I might even purchase season 2 on DVD.

The producers claim that SGU is more mature??? Well if you think with your bum, then maybe, but for those of us who think with out minds, and enjoy proper sci-fi with gadgets, aliens and family values then the show doesn’t seem all that mature.
SG1 attracted all sorts of people with different religious backgrounds. (I personally know of certain Jehovah’s Witnesses and Catholics that adore that show)
Well guess what .. their whole families had to turn off SGU because of Mr. Brad Wright and his Ms. Joe Mallozzi’s big fat heads. We all sufferred an incredible loss of good sci-fi as a result.

I loved the other shows and the initial film that introduced us to the stargate but i just cannot stand this new series. It feels like the producers have decided the new fan base want a soap opera sci fi show to watch instead of what they liked initially.
I have literally been unable to watch the last few shows because after sitting through them i feel angry that this incarnation of stargate may kill what was a good show and i also just find myself bored by what im experiencing when i watch SGU.

This is not scifi. It is a badly written trailer trash soap opera for weak minded drama queens. I have been a fan of SG since the original movie in 1994. I loved SG1 and Atlantis. This is not Stargate and the writers should be ashamed for trying to push this crap on it’s loyal fans in search of a fast buck. Neither my family nor I will waste our time watching this anymore.
SGU is a soap opera in space. PERIOD! science fiction viewers want action ,suspence ,gadgets ,monsters (aliens) and likeable characters. While this TV show does have a little suspence and gadgets…..Its is still a SOAP OPERA. I hate soap opera’s ,I hate survivor island, reality TV all blows…If I want to see a fat prick I will look at the next door neighbour ( just kidding) SG1 started off with a good plausable show with actors that should be there.
Richard Dean Anderson summed it up in an episode…. You think I like it? I am just going to have to cut that clip out and put it in a rant for SGU.

I personally think it’s awesome, it’s very different to SG1 or SGA, but still it’s pretty good. Alot of people don’t like change, and most ppl probably don’t like it cause it’s completely different to SG1 and SGA, i have watched every single stargate episode out there, and SGU is very interesting. Also the dynamic cameras make it seem more lively and realistic.
Hah. Looks like the producers couldn’t tell that the show would be such a steaming turd pile by the third episode that they didn’t steer the show in the right direction. Yes I know the show’s first 10 episodes where already finished .. but that’s my point. A quality assurance program could have steered the show in the right direction as it was being written.

I read through all the posts here and laughed when the initial comments were all from people defending the show. Now no one is defending it. The show is crap, the characters are selfish twats, and it’s boring as hell. Cancel it and find people who can really write a mature stargate series.

I’m watching my last ever episode of the Stargate franchise (Pain).I own every (EVERY) DVD that has a Stargate name on,but this is it for me.The producers should be ashamd of themselves.You destroyed a great concept in Sci-fi and one that needs a lot of work to do.Well,you did it .

I totally agree with you Mike. Stargate Universe sucks! The whole story line is stupid, and all the characters seem to have problems. Heck, the people can’t even get along with each other on the ship. All they do is argue, fight, and explore unpopulated planets (with no people). That just totally ruins the show. I liked Stargate Atlantis and Stargate SG-1, but SG-U blew it.
I’m really trying to get into SGU. I want to be a fan of SGU. But they are making it really hard. The long musical interludes? Made me think back to when SG-1 was trapped in a time dilation field after the ORI ship fired on them and they showed Cam jogging around on the ship while playing music as the years pass. But it was my memory that carried me through the interlude and after it, I was thinking to myself… What the hell am I watching?! Seriously. I get trying to bring in a different audience. But your driving away most of the old ones. And what is with bringing back Daniel Jackson only to find out he is a memory in a dream sequence. An act of desperation on the part of the writers to draw in old fans. I may have got that dream sequence thing wrong, but it is testament to how SGU cannot keep the attention of an old Stargate Fan. I am a lost fan. And by that I don’t mean I am a fan of the show LOST. Good luck getting renewed SGU. I hope that the future of the Stargate franchise does not rely on the success of SGU. If so… farewell Stargate! Into the blackhole you go. Its better to know you are dead than to watch something that was great wither away in an alzheimers like series; trying to rise to the greatness of it’s former self. Thank god for Hulu and DVDs. Something good to remember you by. I’d rather watch Gilmore Girls with my wife than try and stay awake through another episode of SGU.
I love stargate and the first 3 episodes were to explain if u never saw sga or sg1 then u should not complain. Sgu is fine, the planet has naquida and it was unstable so it blew up they hate rush cuz he diled the 9th cheveron gate and not earth the ship was used to put gates on planets for the anceints to go to to survive if needed they can reed anchent cuz almost everyone has seen it and could have taugh ely ely is just doing what his script sayes and if u want blood see incursion pt 1 and 2 and ep befor dat
I love how someone that has never watched any of the stargate shows thinks they are such an expert. Then to say that it is power rangers cheesy have you never watched that show either, in you own words WTF. For one thing if the SG1 series had been total crap why did it run longer than any other Sci Fi series in history and spawn 2 related series and 2 more movies. I just love it when people that have never read the book watched the show or movie think they can be a expert critic on it. To me all this does is show how ignorant / stupid someone can be.

This rant is comedy gold. Virtually every complaint you have seems to stem from your own short attention span, as it’s all there for you, if you’d actually have listened.
Half the stuff the Author of this review is upset about is explained within the show, the show half is found out by watching the 15 series of Stargate lore. Please learn to watch TV (You shouldn’t have to learn to watch, but yeah.) before you make a mindless review. SGU is pile of shit when comes to writing, because Sci-fi wanted a new BSG.

I honestly only watch Stargate Universe because it is Stargate and I have no other Stargate shows left to watch. I miss the old Stargate series of which I have watched every episode. I hate the change of feel between the Stargate SG1/Atlantis shows and Stargate Universe. Stargate used to have comedy, drama, and many times a serious note on the human condition.
That said. I don’t know why you want Eli dead. He is one of my favorite characters in the show. He reminds me most of the old Stargate series.
It’s an amazing show, it’s a shame some of the children that follow the franchise, those that want explosions and pew pew lasers can’t appreciate it :(
im in love with stargate. I have a friend at my job that used to be a guard at the real cheyenne mountain base. He would catch stargate fans trying to sneak into the base to find the stargate all the time. awesome.

Well, it’s ben about a year since Stargate Universe started and I just keep wondering where it all went wrong in the Stargate franchise?
I remember sitting down with my wife to watch parts 1 & 2 and really looking forward to the next chapter in the Stargate franchise. We watched them and I remember that we didn’t say any thing for about a minute after part 2 ended. We couldn’t believe what we had just saw! Let’s just say that it was a huge dissapointment us then and we just feel the same now.
I got into SG1 in about 2000 and really got to enjoy the mix of sci-fi storylines and the great humour which really mix well. I liked Atlantis (less than SG1) but thought it was a great spin off.
The problem is that SGU doesn’t really have any likeable qualities. I want characters that are interesting and that I want to care about following every week. I want new story ideas that make me think and make we wonder. I want a spaceship that isn’t so dark that I have to turn up the contast and brighness on my TV set in order to see the thing.
I don’t want unceccesary sex scenes, constant bickering with awful unlikeable characters and the most important thing that I don’t want is the use of those awful mind transference stones!
So, no stones, no soap opera, no unnecessary sex scenes, no people walking down corriders holding peaces of paper and muttering rubbish for no reason. More lights, more interesting characters and an actual bloody story!
The rating are coming in for the first stories for Season 2. They are not good and it’s understandable why :-(
I know this is almost a year later but I feel compelled to say something.
First and foremost, by your own admission you know little to nothing about SG and so need to calm the fuck out. I do admit that there is a lot of information the new viewers are supposed to just accept that there is an explanation (an explanation that is obvious to longtime fans).
However there is a lot of problems with everything else you wrote. Proof’s are mathematical expressions that show a certain equation balances on both sides and are correct. There are many forms of mathematics, not all taught in your average math class, and some people that can apply those advanced techniques faster and in ways others can’t. The character of Eli is supposed to be once of those people. The game would simply have to check the balanced equation and if it works, problem solved.
Civilians are often given special security clearance if they are the best in their field or can contribute something noone else can. This explains why there are civilians at a “secret” military base. Furthermore, you would have to know that some level of government has knowledge of this base and in the show a certain senator does and has authorized funds to be given to the program run there. So he invites his daughter/assistant along, SO WHAT!!!
Lets continue, if I started firing a gun at a nuclear missile, I’m sure I could accidentally set it off somehow. How is so hard to believe that firing more powerful Sci-fi weapons at a Sci-fi reactor wouldn’t do something similar. Do you really need an answer, maybe the characters don’t know exactly themselves. If you even get into the story at all you’d realize that the show isn’t about what happened in our galaxy that’s important…it’s what is going on on the ship now.
Lastly, and I will give you part marks for this, is them controlling the systems. If the SG mythos, the Stargates and this ship were made by a race that predates our civilization (the race that built the city of Atlantis). in the show they explain that they language is based on Latin. With this in mind and the fact that you would have to udnerstand that people have been studying the technology for over a decade you could see how they would know how to work Destiny’s systems with little to no effort. if you didn’t know all that it would appear weird, however, its not such a stretch if you just use your imagination a little. They do give bits and pieces of this information in the first few episodes but I guess you missed it.
I think you have made huge assumptions and judgments about a show you know nothing about or even gave the time to try. Did you get turned off of Battlestar Galactica because they didn’t fully explain where the cylons came from or their reasons for attacking the colonies. I admit also that I have watched very little of the miniseries or TV show and these questions may have been answered but my point is the same. Did you walk away because not everything was explained in the first 10 minutes?
I encourage you to reply to this even after all this time.

Stargate Universe is the best TV show ever! I really think it is! Its not only action, but you need to think about it too! It could be a perfectly true story. A reall simulation how it could happend if it was real. They just dont trow everything right at you. And now the second episodes are even getting better. I really think there are some people here who cant just get it…
I’m really shocked so much people think it’s bad. And if you turn it off in 5 minutes it’s normal you dont like it!! Its with every damn TV Show.

SG-1 with Jack O’Neill was by far the best, he made the show, always knew when to make things blow up, and had a sense of humor.
Well everyone should do like me and just cancel your cable and satelite and send a message to these morons who have ruined the reputation of an otherwise excellent series . I was able to get as far as the second show and then called my sat provider and told them the reason why I was canceling . Because of sgu . I can’t even stand to watch a commercial of the nerxt episode as it just makes me sick to my stomach to have to endure such awful writing and acting . I wish some aliens would just find them and blow the whole ship to hell and get it over with . I am shocked it went into it’s second season . What to hell is wrong with this world . Who to hell can stomach this crap .

Most people who watching soap opera are housewives and emotionally unstable teenagers. If you ask them>> what a star in the night sky is? they will answer ” it is shining dot that good blessed them with” . Non of them has any interest in science fiction. Then why go with soap opera? because their is more people who are watching soap opera than science fiction.

Yes they beamed Eli to the ship, which we have several of if you’ve ever seen the show (oh wait, you haven’t) and the ship brought him to Icarus; a planet thats stargate is connected to the core of the planet. And the politians daughter had to sign a non-disclosure agreement, just like Eli, and just like everyone working on the damn stargate program. Seriously dude, you need to relax. Have you ever seen MST3K “If you wonder how he eats and breaths and other science facts! Just keep in mind its just a show and you should really just relax!”
And if you know ANYTHING about Stargate and have actually seen the movie you should know that the Stargate program is a top-secret and no civilians are aware of its existence.
Battlestar had its good and bad things, what I hated about BSG where the overlong dramatic points where they’d zoom up on a guys head and keep it there so you can watch him think in slow motion for 5 minutes. The show was fairly entertaining though and aside from the occasional snore-fest episode I rather enjoyed it. SGU does follow a similar path of Battlestar but it is deeply rooted in the universe of Stargate.
The reason Stargate is better than the other two previous shows is because it is modern, I also like that the show is serial (regardless of whether you think they do a good job on character development or not there is still some character development… though they do need to do a better job at keeping consistent with that episodes do develop diff. characters).
What I didn’t like about the old stargate was that each episode was a stand-alone and it was kind of boring, also the graphics were so damn cheesy I couldn’t get into it. Like the Aliens in this one episode were just a bunch of naked dudes painted white; they looked like mimes.
SGU is overall a good sci-fi show and I don’t think it deserved to get canceled.
On a side note, the best sci-fi show ever is Babylon 5. Anyone who thinks that show sucks doesn’t know sci-fi.
Also I believe the reason SGU was canceled is because all those trekkies who loved the old Stargate shows and who don’t know crap about what good TV is tried to watch it and realized it wasn’t an ordinary Stargate show then had a bitch fit.
To the guy who says that its “too soapy” and then calls it a “Drama” well what is wrong with drama? All the best shows in history were “drama,” look at what HBO does; all of their shows are dramas with the occasional comedy.
Its not a ‘soap’ clearly someone doesn’t like their characters to actually think and have emotions, just be mindless drones that move the picture forward so that the hack writers can make some kind of political left-wing statement about health-care or the Iraq war. I don’t really expect any TV to be very good at making a statement about the real world, if I want to get that then I’ll read a book or watch a well made drama film like The Pianist.
IF the basis of good TV is that it says something about the world situation then I guess the concept of entertainment becomes moot.
You can’t judge a book by its cover. Nor can you judge a series by the pilot episode. Season 2 was way more intense (lots of space battles). I wish the series was not canceled. It needs a third season.
Yeah integrating a problem into a video game that a gamer solves is stupid and unrealistic and it just happened like a month ago…
