Hello fellow piloteers,
This has been a banner month for CCP’s award winning mmorpg sci-fi title EVE Online. You might have noticed that this past weekend marked the start of the eighth annual alliance tournament. This event brought a record breaking 60,000 pilots online this weekend that shows excitement and support for the game. Also take into account the 20,000 viewers that logged into the EVE Online HD stream of the tournament action. This has been a busy weekend in New Eden, if you happened to miss out on some of the action then make sure you catch up through watching the videos posted on youtube by the EVE Online community members.
If that wasn’t enough great things to say about EVE Online, today was the beginning of the Great Land Rush for planetary resources. I am going to break it down really simple. Since EVE went live in 2003 the planets that have been placed across the solar systems have been nothing but lifeless masses. CCP began to improve on the visuals of the planets in the Dominionexpansion. In the latest expansion: Tyrannis they gave players the opportunity to scan, colonize and begin mining the planets for resources. Here’s the kicker: this is all leading up to the release of Dust 514 that is reported to be a console based third person shooter directly tied into the EVE Online game universe. Sounds awesome, right?
Today was the first day that players can plant flags on these planets and also brought a record breaking 56,106 players to the shard. This is CCP’s third highest PCU count that hasn’t been recorded for weekend play. The company has already recorded over half a million planetary structures and that’s a very respectable chunk of the 67,000 planets located across New Eden.
What does this say to me as an EVE Player? More people, more pirates, more PVP, more gate camps, more skirmishes, more things to sell and make money on, more things to build and most importantly more fun. Over 60,000 people can’t be wrong.
If you haven’t already read about all the rules and regulations of the tournament then feel free to take a look at my post about the alliance tourney. If you are ready to re-sub to EVE to stake some claims in The Great Land Rush then take a look at some of the links and how-to videos about the new abilities and structures for planetary interaction. If you are getting excited about all this news as much as I am then do not hesitate and head straight over to the EVE Online website and apply for the 14 day trial.
If you have any questions or comments about the new EVE Online developments or on MMORPG’s in general, please post them below. All feedback is welcome.
Play safe,
Inktomi
