Warhammer Online: 300k Subscribers as of Dec 31st 2008

According to EA’s latest fiscal report Warhammer Online as of the end of last quarter has 300k subscribers in North America and Europe.  Although not as high as I would have thought, it is still a very solid number to build on. I’m sure the weak PvE and the problems they have been having with RvR have not helped those numbers, but I still think Warhammer is a solid game and will only get better with time.

  1. While 300,000 is still a lot of people, it shows that they are in trouble when you look at how many people they used to have. This data shows us that Warhammer has lost 50-60% of its subscribers in about 3-4 months. It is a staggering statistic, and it may even trump what happened to Funcom with AoC.

That being said, i agree with you that they have been making strides to make the game better and continue to do so. it looks like they are finally going to finish bringing in the classes that were cut for launch, as well as adding some content down the road. While I do not play any longer, I often times wonder if the outcome would have been different if the game had launched with all of these classes and patches we have seen so far.

It just goes to show you that it is hard to justify criticizing a game that gets delayed because you only have one chance at a first impression.

  2. I left the game the moment Mark announced they were capping the fortress fights because it was the proof i needed that warhammer wasn’t forfilling what was promised. I had the hope this would become a pvp-centric game. While that still might be the case it was until the day i uninstalled better to pve to get higher in rank rather then killing players.

The loss of so much players also is proof that you can’t put an unfinished game onto the market because the amount of choice people have these days in playing games they will leave a game more easy.

It’s nice to see content being added but imo most of it belonged into the release-version of warhammer.

The fact that a lot of pvp mechanics didn’t work or worked as being planned on release day was another nail in the coffin. Yeah it was fun trying to flip zones so you could finally go for the city that is until the moment the game crashed and hours upon hours of work were lost and you could start all over again.

In the end it’s sad to see the current state of the game because i had so much hope for it as my main game for a long time but as usual it became an unfinished game with far to many problems. I don’t pay to be faced by problems, when i login i expect to get and make fun. Warhammer never could give me that promise which is too bad.

  3. Heh, when AoC loses 50-60% of its player base the game is deemed an epic failure.

When Warhammer loses 50-60% of its player base its just the way the MMO market works.

You guys are a good laugh.

These guys ranted and raved over the major loss of players…yet, here sits WAR falling down as well, and not performing as expected.
Mythic better hope the “Live” expansion is enough to bring players back, like the fixes AoC has done (and is enjoying a resurgence as well)

Sure does help that AoC has better PvE which is what people do when they need downtime from PvP…
    Mythic never got that idea.
Reason #1 why it is failing…

  5. I have to ask, at what point do you say: 99% of all active gamers jump from game to game saying it’s failing and it sucks and they should have listened to them. I have seen this about every game but WoW and since that is the UBER fun stellar success, go play it. Good grief. What complainers. Could you all please make WoW a failure by going back to your ps2 and xbox’s. I would LOVE that. You guys are absolutely destroying the pc gaming market. It used to be fun lol.

  6. I play WAR now, after admittedly leaving it for just several months till things were fixed, such as classes, bugs, the ever so painful buff trouble that caused no end of lag. but, im glad i re joined, because the steps that have been taken, and the distances covered are phenominal. WAR really has turned their game around, yes there are frequent petit problems risen, to name but one: with classes being too powerful – but so does every other MMO. I do entirely agree with the idea of first impressions though. i personally wish WAR had started on time, with the patches they have now. i have convinced about 10 people who used to play alongside with me on DAoC and have been active WOW players for several years to just try WAR for one more month and now forge their opinion – after joining WAR for merely 5 hours, they fell in love with it, and we are now all playing this new, vibrant, working progress MMO, (and i feel that working progress needs to be highlighted as it shows that the game really is tending to the needs of its subscribers, which i feel just isnt seen in other games anymore) that i do believe will become so much better in time to come, and if word gets out about its success i think its going to flurrish in the MMO market.

  7. Warhammer i started it last month and it is THE best game i have played since ultima online if you enjoy free pvp and great gameplay this is the game for you, I pvp thats all i want to do WOW and every other mmo has a horrible grind to level and then a horrible gear grind this game does not have that from lvl 1 you are in the action haveing fun and getting gear by PVPING.
If you lie to PvP and dont like to grind your life away playing a game then this is the game for you! alot has changed since it first came out and it a FREAKING AWSOME!!!
