SWTOR: New Concept Art and Fan Friday!

Another day, another reason to love Bioware. This installment of Studio Insider explores the artistic processes that produce the stunning concept art in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Diego Almazan takes a break from the drawing board to detail the steps he takes when building a concept for TOR. Also past the cut are some interesting Q&A posts, as well as Fan Friday festivities — check it out.

Almazan, the concept artist mentioned earlier, sets to work on an imposing Sith Temple. His keywords are “dark, eerie, and foreboding”; from the looks of the drawings posted at the Studio Insider, he’s hit his mark. As detail is added in every step, we can begin to feel the palpable aura emanating from the depths of the temple — hopefully we will be walking down these halls at (or around) launch! Particularly interesting is the casting of light rays in the final step to add that extra realism (and creepiness).

The community Q&A didn’t reveal anything particularly mind-blowing or surprising, but we can confirm the inclusion of a jump ability — so check that off the list. Here are a few of the more worthwhile posts:

Q: Will players ever be able to make storyline decisions so radical that it changes their Faction alignment? (asked by Aaron)

A: At this time, we don’t plan on allowing characters to change faction as part of the class story. One of the main reasons for this is that it would interfere with your class story’s continuity. Every class has a detailed story that they progress through from level one until the level cap, and players will want to see how those stories unfold. That said, there is quite a bit of room for players to make dark and light side decisions throughout the game that affect your experience.

Q: I’m worried that Force powers may be overpowered in comparison to non-Force users… Will this be a problem? (asked by Luke)

A: Every character class in The Old Republic will feel heroic. No matter what part of the game you’re playing, from Warzones to Flashpoints, there will be good reasons to play every class – it’s our intent that no one feels punished for playing the class they love.

Lastly, this week’s Fan Friday brings in a fresh batch of artistis offerings from the fan community surrounding Star Wars: The Old Republic. One of the more prominent fan sites, Mos Eisley Radio, has shared their thoughts on the game and community. Check it out here.
