Atari Sells Cryptic Studios

Chinese based MMO publisher Perfect World is the proud new owner of Cryptic Studios as of today.  Atari announced that it has sold Cryptic Studios, the developers behind such hits as Star Trek Online, City of Heroes and Champions Online, for $50.4 million.

Atari had first announced in mid May that it would be selling Cryptic Studios and it looks like it didn’t take long to find a buyer.  Perfect World, the chinese based MMO publisher behind such titles as Forsaken World, Perfect World, Battle of the Immortals and many others, has purchased the studio and it will be interesting to see what happens with some of its titles.

All of Perfect World’s MMO titles are based on the free to play business model.  Seeing as how Champions Online recently went F2P, does this mean we can expect to see STO and possible CoH going F2P as well in the future.  Only time will tell.
