Combat: Guild Wars 2 vs TERA

Over the weekend I had the chance to try out Guild Wars 2 during the game’s first beta weekend, as well as put in some time with TERA as its head-start began on Saturday. Jumping between the two games I was really able to get a feel for each games combat system and if I had to pick a winner between the two, I’d have to say TERA wins and wins easily.

Now don’t get me wrong, Guild Wars 2’s system is an improvement from the standard tab-targeting we’re all used to, but it just can’t compete with real action combat that TERA features. ArenaNet went with a sort of a hybrid combat system where for all intents and purposes, its basically tab-targeting, but they added some dodging moves for a more action oriented combat feel. While dodging is possible, I dont’ see it coming into play quite as much in PvP as it does in PvE. After all, players are going to be locked on to you, so dodging will mostly be used for AoE (area of effect) spells.

In all honestly, during my time in World vs World, I didn’t really notice much difference between a true tab-targeting MMORPG and GW2. It pretty much felt the same to me.

On the other hand, everyone in TERA has to aim at their targets, so dodging is extremely important, and if you’re good at it, you’ll have a huge advantage, especially in PvP. It’s also a hell of a lot more exciting as everyone needs to be constantly moving, in PvP and PvE. Healers need to hit their target with their heals, so they can’t just sit there apart from where the combat is, unless they happen to have unbelievable aim. Melee characters also have the ability to block attacks adding even more depth to combat.

With tab-targeting, any ranged class was always a little boring to play, most of the time you’d just keep your distance and spam your ability bar. In TERA you’re constantly on the move trying to get the best shots, since TERA has some abilities that allow players to do more damage when attacking an opponent from behind.

The real deciding factor for me is that today I’m hungering for more TERA and not so much of GW2, even though I really enjoyed WvW.

  1. My guild and I hate PvE with a passion, so I’m sticking with GW2. I haven’t had that much fun since my DAoC days. Hell, the WvW in GW2 is even more fun than Warhammer Online was (before they took out the forts).

I tried out TERA with the guild on their last beta event, and we just didn’t get into it. PvP wasn’t all that in TERA, but after this 1st beta event in GW2 everyone in the guild is hooked and looking forward to play GW2.

Considering GW2 won’t be coming out for several months, TERA and other games will have time to build a nice fanbase and loyal customer base. Once GW2 comes out tho, can’t really see many true pvpers staying playing any other game.

  2. I agree, TERA has great combat, but the PvP is lacking so I’m also planning on switching to GW2 once it launches. I just wish GW2 went with full action combat as well.

  3. My friends also tell me that TERA has amazing combat, unfortunately I couldn’t try the open beta because I live in Asia(IP blocked). I have a question: if we have to use the mouse cursor to aim at the target before we fire off a skill, how do we turn around? Turn, aim, fire, turn, aim, fire and so on? Or forced to keyboard turn? I would definitely prefer the first. Hope I haven’t completely misunderstood how it works.

  4. @Wyzim

In TERA your camera is locked to your mouse unless you press a button to enable the mouse cursor. I only did this when I needed to use my inventory or check my quest log, etc.

I had the same initial thoughts about both games after my first day playing GW2.
I REALLY like what they did with pvp / questing (or the lack of), but honestly the combat is not exciting to me.
I can tolerate boring questing if it means I get a satisfying action game where I get to battle giant bosses and dodge out of the way of a killer swipe at the last second.

It also doesn’t help GW2’s case that it ran and looked poor on my machine. I run every other game fully maxed with no problems, but GW2 was not playing nice.

  5. I thought that Guild Wars 2 was supposed to be the Mekka of MMO PvP buy I was seriously disappointed. For structured PvP you only have two BGs, both king of the hill style, which gets old pretty quickly. WvWvW seems to be a lot more fun, assuming you can bypass the player cap and consider spamming Arrow Carts skill.

I can’t see anybody that was a fan of tab targeting PvP leaving WoW or Rift to play GW2 and if you are sick of that style, as I know a lot of people are then Tera is your best bet.

  6. Im with Robby. GW will just have much more player-centric / organic replayability and purpose I think. Who is your guild?

  7. “where for all intensive purposes”

    should be

“where for all intents and purposes”

You don’t want to know what they call you on urban dictionary for using the former…

  8. I’m really confused…I never got the feeling that you just stand around during combat in Guild Wars 2. I found that if I just stood there and used skills, I died (PvE). And the same in PvP. Moving around, changing your position, dodging the big hits/spells, I don’t see where there is a lack of real action dynamic combat. For those with ranged weapons, it’s best to select your target to shoot, but you can just attempt to wing it and shoot in the direction of your enemy. Because, unlike every other MMO I’ve played, when you throw/fire something in Guild Wars 2 and something else gets between you and the intended target, your projectile will hit what’s in the way, not what you were aiming for in the distance.

Also, while there were only two maps for structured PvP during the beta, ArenaNet has stated that there will be at least four maps at launch.

  9. “I can’t see anybody that was a fan of tab targeting PvP leaving WoW or Rift to play GW2 and if you are sick of that style, as I know a lot of people are then Tera is your best bet.”

You are mistaken, GW2 is a middle ground between standard mmo tab target combat and Tera. ALso for PvPers if they want PvP why would they go to Tera, they have already stated there will be NO PvP battlegrounds till the end of July / early August, so why waste your money buying in May ands waiting 2 -3 months for something that should be in the game from release.

Theres going to be alot of disappointed gamers, cos the game feels like an Asian mmo and plays like one. I expect Tera to go the same route as Aion but in a much faster manner, F2P in 12 months mark my words, lack of content and for a game supposdily based on PvP a lack of true PvP.

  10. Dude…

Tera, if you watch high level play, the combat is just rise and repeat until the mob dies.

and Tear failed in so many countries it’s bound to be F2P very soon

  11. I do not agree Tera is horrible

Guild Wars 2 combat is funner and require skills, and you can move while spell casting. Tera on the other hand you have to stop in order to cast spells, and its way too grindy.

  12. Your nothing but a dumb ass tera fan boy….Guild wars 2 require dogging as well…Tera will go free to play in a year it crashed and burned in 3 other countries already I hope that piece of shit burn..O yea guild wars 2 had more beta testers and facebook likes and also more positive reviews, Tera is a shitty grind game, I hope it crash and burn..I deleted your blog on mmosite enjoy.

  13. I agree that between Tera and GW2, Tera wins hands down. Tab-targetting is one of those old relics that needs to quietly die. Dodging in GW2 felt wonky and unnecessary in PvE for the mobs I felt would always hit we no matter where I was, very disappointing. I did kind of like the very breif cut-scenes in GW2 in which there was spoken dialog but it’s a far cry from SW:TOR.

  14. i played both beta’s and have to disagree,

Tera is using an aimbot for the caster classes, just play a caster and you will see the skill bend to hit the target, even if the area is small it’s still an aimbot, i never needed to use the dodge in Tera, and you don’t even have it from the start.

In GW2 i never used the tab button at all, i played straight up action style, and unlike Tera i did use the dodge, and needed to if i wanted to live, i was also able to strife side to side and blast out skills.

so clearly your are just a Tera fan and didn’t fully try out both games.

  15. @Lisamonroe

I came here to look for advice, because if frankly, I can’t test these games myself. Not only did your comment add noting to the discussion and waste my time, but you insulted your community by writing that hateful garbage. You come off as the “fanboy” you are trying to discredit. If you would like to know how write a better post in support of the game you like take a look at what Kevin and Robby wrote.

  16. I can’t see anybody that was a fan of tab targeting PvP leaving WoW or Rift to play GW2 and if you are sick of that style, as I know a lot of people are then Tera is your best bet.

I think you might be surprised at what no recurring monthly subscription fees can achieve.

  17. @Lisamonroe

“…. Requires dogging? …… ooh er wasnt aware it was THAT kind of game!”

  18. Interesting. What I think is that TERA′s system is an improvement from the standard tab-targeting we’re all used to, but it just can’t compete with real action combat that GW2 features.

TERA does not seem to bring nothing new to the table. It got rid of sticky targeting (which is not common but not new either) but the base stones of standard combat like stop&cast or multitude of buttons are still present. Also, the class experience seems to be quite different. I played mystic a bit during the weekends which just requires you to shoot in the enemy’s general direction to hit. I tried a couple of levels on priest and was quite surprised – priests required precision aiming, enemy legs were unhittable etc.

On the other hand, Guild wars 2 keep the sticky targets but does away with the other features: You can (and should unless you feel like trying the downed state) move when casting, you can dodge for a limited invulnerability (moving away is usually better though, it doesn’t interrupt casts), the amount of available skills is limited, relies less on the get hit – get healed up model etc.

I don’t have an opinion on which system is better – GW2’s PvE is a bit too fast for my tastes; however, I think that as far as the “true action” part goes, TERA’s not a competitor for GW2.

  19. Hi, I have a question, I saw some clips from youtube showing the combat system in GW2, where you need to use the mouse cursor to select at the target? What I want to ask is, what if I move my character (melee class) near the target, and press the skill keys, would my character be able to hit at the target without using the mouse to choose at the target in the first place?

  20. @lenny: Whatever your weapon/ability touches receives the damage/effect regardless of targetting. You wont hit friendlies ofcourse unless the ability is meant to.

@blog author: I can’t comment on Tera because I haven’t played, but you are misleading people on gw2. You go ahead and ignore dodge in pvp on gw2, watch me wreck your face. Anyone who has half a brain will realize how valuable dodging in guildwars is. If you weren’t dodging, you spent alot of time on the ground pvp or pve. Gw2 takes skill, any hardcore player will tell you that. People who complain are the ones spending most of their time getting destroyed and personally I say good riddance.

  21. The problem with GW2 was that is was both new and difficult … people tried to play it like a basic tab-targetting spam-fest and found it difficult … I did the same … then I actually learned how to play GW2 and the combat was just amazing. I played a melee and yes, even though tab-targetting is in game it is not needed. The combat is fluid, tactical and fast (and I personally mean that in a good way). I feel like I actually am in combat when I am in comabt, and this is not just for BAM’s, but for te majority of mobs.

I played 3 BWE’s for TERA. Tera is simple. It’s slower than GW2 and so it feels easier to get into even though it’s different. Yes you do aim, but everything else is the same as other MMO’s … skill rotations, spamming, etc … if anything they’ve “dumbed it down” even further with the ability to “chain” attacks, now I just need to hold down my left mouse button and occasionally press my space bar. For the vast majority of mobs as well you don’t even need to move … only BAM’s actually require you to move/dodge. Even as a cloth wearing class I rarely went below 80% hp’s fighting normal mobs without moving at all.

There’s the difference … TERA new but very easy to understand and even easier mobs to make it “feel” fun … GW2 new but a difficult to understand system (unless you tried to play it as a standard MMO) and mobs to match … infinitely more fun once you get the hang of it.

  22. … GW2 new but a difficult to understand system (unless you tried to play it as a standard MMO) and mobs to match … infinitely more fun once you get the hang of it.

Should read … GW2 new but a difficult to understand system (especially if you tried to play it as a standard MMO) …

  23. It seems to me that a lot of people who have been waiting on the PvP from these games are actually waiting for the wrong thing.

These games are MMORPGs – the whole point of the Role Playing Game genre is the story, the adventure. Whereas the hardcore PvPers are not interested in the stiry but just the combat and maybe this is where the dissallusionment with all the MMORPGs is coming from.

What you are all actually craving is just a medieval FPS with persistant objectives.

PvP is a nice addition to MMORPGs, but the main focus really should be on the PvE and the story surely.

Doesn’t such a big emphasis on PvP actually dilute the MMORPG experience?

Actually GW2 is designed from the ground up with both pvp and pve in mind they have an entire section of the game dedicated to pvp s very large section the skills are set up so that if needed they can change the way skills work independently of each other in pve and pvp. on-top of that the mobs have been designed in a way that they shouldn’t even have to the skills for both. ill leave you with this. pvp is a very important part of an mmo because human nature is to compete

  25. One IMPORTANT thing you’re forgetting: In GW2, when you dodge, you are immune to damage and effects for a second or two. Well-timed dodges will be important, but they’re not going to be ridiculously clutch, either.

  26. im sorry GW2 is just like wow tab target macro all your skill into 1 button and strafe around your mob to win dodging is useless in general, tera was fun has a few flaws but in the end far more fun to level and pvp in. I mean i’w played wow so long any tab target game just feels like it’s not as good a wow their buggy for the most and not as smooth and the cass balance is always >:( but so is wow. the aim bot as a caster in tera is a let down tbh but if your gonna play a caster in an action game might as well go play a fps use your magic boom-stick that kills ppl when you shoot them. over all i’d like to give tera a 8/10 for well doing a lot good but still lacking future patches will hopefully fix these minor things, gw2 is well wow so if you take away everything they haven’t done before you have what dodge, so that makes the game a complete copy on the engine graphics are a bit better world is the same size quests are just as tedious as ALL other mmos (tera included) and pvp is macro all to you magic mouse and rape the snazz out of everyone. If you like raping people by hitting 1 button in pvp and think the mindless raiding don’t stand in the fire wow type gameplay is fun gw2 is for you if you want to have a somewhat challenge tera “might” suit you more, playing tera solo is not as fun as playing with a m8, in gw2 this doesn’t really change solo is as boring in my opinion, have to give gw2 a 6/10 cause it really just is wow with a graphic buff and a duck&roll needless, but GW2 scores high on being a one time subscription that’s just epic in my opinnion also mean there will be very few content updates.

  27. I must say I am quite glad gw2 didn’t go with full action combat. This is an mmporg. There are many many action games that rely on twitch for those who want that. I want to play the role of a hero in a fantasy game. I don’t have amazing dexterity, the ability to cast magic spells, etc. Those that like twitch games have many choices. A role playing game’s combat relies on the powers and abilities of my character, coupled with my choices as a player.

  28. Gw2 is free because the ex-blizzard employees probably got sick of all the weiners whining about wanting a free version of WoW. Well, there it is in GW2.

All you folks claiming to have played Tera and said it was easy, obviously only played to level 10. After you hit level 20 the game gets more difficult, and once you hit level 50… It’s pretty hardcore.

The dodge is useless in Tera? You obviously never played it…. GW2 will be successful because it’s F2P. Not because it has awesome graphics, or a new style combat. It’s for the casual gamer who whines about paying for a game. Carebears included. I’d rather play a game that challenges my skill, not holds it back, like Gw2.

It will sell millions of copies because it has a following, doesn’t require the best hardware because the graphics are mediocre. Quit kidding yourself, it’s just as easy as all the other Tab-Spam MMO’s. This is why it will be successfuly because it will cater to people who don’t have to be that skilled in gaming. NCSoft has been around for awhile and swallowed of Arenanet and will make this game what it is. I’ve played all their titles and enjoyed them to say the least. Gw2 will be another F2P that I’ll pay for, install, enjoy for a short time and quit because of sheer boredom and lack of nothing new.

  29. The person above me, what the fuck are you talking about? GW2?free? Get your facts straight.
Before you go and make a fool of yourself by bashing about something you don’t have a clue about , fuck yourself. GW2 is B2P, as in BUY TO PLAY, fuckhead.

I’ve played both Tera and GW2, and they have their ups and downs. I really like the combat mechanics to Tera because you MUST always be cautious in combat regardless of what class you are playing. Selfaiming is clearly one of the things that makes Tera so unique. Instead of standing in one spot and spamming the heck of your skills(like most of the MMORPG in the gamingindustry atm), you must move around and attack- that is friggin epic!

And the graphic?, oh my god, it’s so friggin colorful that it makes you shit rainbows! But the questing system? same old, same old shit. I wished they worked on the quest sytem, becaues its a just another bored repetitive fuckin grindfest. But the unique combat mechanics makes up to it. But i fear that in the long run, it won’t be as much fun as it will be when you first started playing it.

Now, i find that it’s fucking retarded to compare a released game with a game that is in beta phase. But i will give you the impressions i got while i played GW2. Some people, including me, were having a tough time dealing with the lags. But ArenaNet went out at said that during the betas, they made the game CPU-bound. But the the game will be GPU-optimized later.

The combat mechanics is somewhat unique, you MUST position yourself near the enemy if you want to attack it. So if you were to mash one button it won’t automatically run towards the enemy and execute the skill. But it’s true that hey have the tab-targetting system. The dodge mechanics sure adds the excitement to the combat. In PVE the dodging works great, but it didn’t affect me as much when i was doing PVP, cause they could just autotab you and just run close to you and execute their skills. The thing is, AreaNet has designed the game in a way that you ARE supposed to die very often, so you must depend on the dodge mechanics if you want to survive. And that’s why so many people were complaining about dying so fast- you’re supposed to DIE and you’re supposed to DODGE. Hadn’t it been for the revival skill that every classes have, it would’ve make the game close to impossbile to play.

The questings system in this game is ORAGSMIC. The dynamics events that i managed to stumble upon, were friggin EPICDARY, i tell you that much. Before i trigged the event, there was no one around. But as soon as i trigged it, a shitstorm of charrs just ran towards me and we fought together to victory.

If Guild Wars 2 had the same gamemechanics as Tera, oh my god, that would be the game of the decade! And if Tera had the same questing system and the PVP/WwW as Guild Wars 2, that would just blown my fucking mind into millions of pieces.

So they both have their ups and downs. Let’s just hope that there are someone out there that are able to pull that off, combining Guild Wars 2 and Tera together and create the best game there ever is.

  30. In this thread: people are zealots.

I thought the original article was fairly concise and accurate, and the fact that 99% of the people criticizing it have to resort to petty name calling and blanket accusations displays to me a distinct lack of actual argument.

Tera is easily the most creative MMO I’ve played in a while in terms of combat originality. I haven’t played another game that made me feel like I actually had to engage an enemy in the way Tera makes me. The closest I can think of is Age of Conan, and even that was really just tab-targeted button mashing with tits. The flow of combat is really nice.

On the negative side, there is absolutely no incentive to PvP right now, so I don’t think we’ve actually gotten a taste of what PvP will actually be like once more people start engaging in it. I already know that the solution to this is going to be battlegrounds, which I absolutely loathe. I have always been a fan of world PvP, and nothing destroys world PvP participation like bland, cookie-cutter battlegrounds. As a result, I probably won’t be sticking around.

  31. My gripes with the article is his underestimation on GW2’s targeting and dodging and over-estimation of TERA’s combat.

Just because you have someone targeted, doesn’t mean you’re going to hit them. Projectiles, AoE, melee swings ect can all be dodged with the dodge mechanic, as opposed to just AoE’s as stated. Suddenly it becomes more important to manage your Endurance (the resource dodging uses) and dodging skills, and to keep moving to avoid becoming a sitting target. Not to mention you can control the direction you dodge, allowing you to potentially set up for cross-profession combo’s / leading enemies into traps you set before ect.

All the while, all TERA has done is trade in tab-targeting for aiming with the mouse. Sure, you can dodge. But you can’t really control the direction you dodge. Warriors go forward, ranged classes go back. Some classes stand there and block. The only reason dodging to the side is possible is because of the massively telegraphed attacks. Not only that, you’re still required to press 1, 2, 3, 4 ect., all the while, activating skills locks you in place. I wouldn’t call it true action combat. It’s still more of a hybrid like GW2.

Not only that, in PvP, you don’t know what type of enemy you’re up against in GW2. Sure, it’s a Warrior. But does he have duel-wielding axes? Or a hammer? Can you kite him? Or does he have a ranged weapon for his weapon switch, or a charge / immobilise skill in case you try that? There’s much more variety on how you play your class, since you can pick from different weapons and skills, ergo, more variety when fighting an opponent, which, in my opinion, requires just as much skill to react to what they’re doing as dodging, as opposed to picking a class, and they have one set of skills, so you can sort of predict what’s coming.

There are going to be people that prefer one game over another. I personally prefer GW2. As well as the combat feeling more fluid, not jerking me to a stop every time I want to cast something, it offers a whole lot more than TERA in terms of game play.

  32. Tera’s combat might be entertaining for a few hours but that’s about it. Guild Wars 2’s combat is an greatly improved versipn of the standard target-based system. However, Guild Wars 2’s combat vs Vindictus’ combat is a whole other story. Overall GW is way better than Vindictus but when it comes to combat GW doesn’t stand a chance vs Vindictus. GW would have been so moch cooler if they had made a Vindictus(ish) combat.

  33. @Guild Wars 2 is for Carebears
Tera is nothing but a all out grind. It has fancy combat i admit yet the developers took it’s potential; pissed on it and forced it down the toilet with a frozen shit. Tera is NOTHING but the combat. It has downright boring quests (kill x numbers of mobs, gather x numbers of flowers) until you feel the urge to kill yourself. It feels that if you achieve nothing, gain nothing with the exception of sparkling thongs. In Tera you’re nothing but a fantasy-pizza delivery and that is exactly what you feel like. This is of course only my opinion and every one are entitled to their own opinion… Except you, simply because I don’t like you.

  34. I do not agree Tera is horrible
Guild Wars 2 combat is funner and require skills”

GW2 fanboys are great hahaha, but seriously I am glad I wont being seeing people like you in any game I play soon. Have fun in GW2 bro. please stay there.

  35. @Yourmom Good thing I won’t be seeing you in GW2, please stay in your WoW and Tera. Know one wants you playing GW2 anyways…

  36. So what if somebody is a fanboy of something? If you can’t change their mind, then you’re loser. There’s s0mething great about that particular thing that he finds it interesting. Like comparing your girlfriend with Kim Kardishian. You’d still choose your girlfriend, won’t you?

I’ll go for GW2 then. Dark Souls are coming out in August too.

  37. I’d have to say I’m entirely baffled by the thought that Tera’s combat is new and overly exciting. I’ve played many a game with the same system, the only difference here is that it open world versus dungeon based. To me this doesn’t scream unique or exciting, especially coupled with a slow Asian style grind fest of a lvling system.

I played 2 classes to lvl 20 during the beta and tried every class I could. Not only did I find that the action was surprisingly lacking but was quite over hyped. Your skills while needing to be aimed and in proper range force you to remain still while the action goes off, while this doesn’t sound all that bad it entirely destroys the flow of the game. This wouldn’t be so bad if the majority of your skills weren’t so bland. For the most part it seemed as though I might as well just stand there and hit my skills in succession because there really was no need to move. I did enjoy the game to some degree don’t get me wrong but at no point did i feel rewarded enough of hopeful enough to think the game deserved a subscription.

If your argument to that is wait till you get in a BAM fight or hit a high enough level then congrats, continue on grinding your life away and spending your money just to be able to play a game that is slightly more enjoyable once you waste that much time.

Also this argument about dodge seems irrelevant as the hit boxes in Tera are ridiculous…it really doesn’t take much effort to hit the monster or for it to hit you. So what was their solution to dodging? make you invincible while it goes off…so not only does it feel clunky but it takes no real skill as you have no real control. As for Gw2 dodging not only felt quite action like it was actually useful in both pve and pvp, if you felt otherwise you really need to try it out again.

Now the topic of pvp, it felt worse than WoW for gankers in the open world and so clunky and terrible when I fought a friend that I thought I must be doing something wrong. So I youtubed pvp fights and really…the game is running around in circles randomly firing off skills hoping to hit the other person running in circles. Yeah great system, I’d rather buy an actual action game and play it by myself for all the fun that is.

Now this comment is outrageously long and most people are saying, yeah that makes sense or what a Gw2 fanboy. To be fair I’d play both if Tera had no subscription, with the hopes that additional content and higher levels might make up for the sore lack of nothing but grinding for the first month of playing, but it isn’t. In fact I can easily scour the internet for free to play games that satisfy my action craving, have a better combat system but only let me play in dungeons.

Gw2 while I have issues with the fact that they could have pushed the action in combat a bit further, and that the WvWvW has issues I’m willing to overcome these things due to the fact that I’m not bored stiff leveling and I don’t have to shill out money every month to play. That and the fact that I’ve played asian games, and to be frank they don’t do as well in NA for a reason. If I’d have to rate both games I’d give it to Gw2 easily
    Tera Gw2
    Graphics 8 8
    Music 7 8
    Story 4 (what story?) 7
    pve combat 7 8
pvp combat 5 (being generous here) 7
    cost 2 10
    Total 60/ 33 48

TL/DR to be short TERA at best is over hyped and not worth the subscription, if you actually want to play a polished, thought out game play Gw2, stick to WoW or try something new with EvE. I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy was given something to write such a terribly biased review.

  38. @Guild Wars 2 is for Carebears
Obviously someone has been watching ForceSC2Strategy on Youtube, if your gonna bash a game man, at least think of your own insults :/ GW2 wont be succesfull because it is free. It will be successfull becuase it is going back to an older time of mmorpgs where it wasnt all about raiding and standing around at max level waiting for a que to pop i.e. WoW Rift ect.. End game starts at level 2! Do your research and think of your own insults :)

  39. I think Tera is like a MMORPG with some dodge. And GW2 is like a MMOFPS?. As in FPS dodging is require to survive, to stay alive longer in a combat? What I’d actually and finally call real time battle while staying inside a MMO?

I’m tired of bullets that are actually guided missiles, or any spell. I once ran away from a damn spell, as a rogue and use my running skill. I dodged it. Happy, some minutes later something hit me, it was a damn spell following me.

I’m more of a FPS player, rather than a MMORPG player, there are some stuff I like, but others makes me want to rage quit. I’ve played WoW for a good while, but don’t feel like doing it anymore.

So. I’m gonna try Tera, but I also want to know about GW2. As from what I keep hearing, GW2 seems like a MMOFPS with the dodging and positioning you need. The lack of tanks and like a good healer and such. Sounds rather fun.

  40. I do not agree Tera is horrible
Guild Wars 2 combat is funner and require skills, and you can move while spell casting. Tera on the other hand you have to stop in order to cast spells, and its way too grindy.

You said Tera is horrible, and yet GW2’s combat is “funner……” Your opinion is no longer relevant.

Tera is not the perfect MMO, but its combat system is definitely the prototype for one. Once you get past the grind, PvP in Tera is -AMAZING.- Hell, even dueling is fun, not to mention relevant to actual PvP unlike other MMOs. (coughWoWcough)

My only complaint about Tera is the uninteresting story and quests. Would’ve been so much better with a few fixes here and there.

  41. From an outside perspective, and researching opinion and facts, it seems to me we have two very different MMO’s on our hands.

Tera is very much an action-oriented game, and as such has one of the best combat systems around, in my opinion. But from what I’ve seen and heard, the quests in the game are so very very terrible, making one of the traditional ways to level up oh so very hard.

GW 2 is a more traditional MMO, with more “skill” required during fights – as combat is not AS turn-based and such like World of Warcraft – giving you the ability to dodge and the like. Also, the PvE is much better than TERA’s, due to the dynamic world and Arenanet’s industry experience.

To me it seems that both are beautiful games, perhaps being more or less beautiful for some.
But if I had to compare, I’d say GW2 is the winner.

  42. Ok Then peeps this is what I think of Tera its Half amazing
    (7 day Trial member)
Graphics 10 Both Character and Environment
    Combat Physics 9
    Environment Physics 7
    Story 3 (at best)
    Leveling 4
    Leveling tree 7
    Character customization 5
    A few others described below

Environment graphics : going to 20 I have found a lot of places (walls/cliff sides/ rocks on ground) that stop you from running in to them stop you short or they but the wrong textures there by mistake ,This I find takes the realize out of the game a bit when you bump in to an invisible wall.

Story : I am not sure how many people here have played FF11 but one of the best things about that was content and story until Abyssea that is,This game however is lacking BADLY in story it has a base on the story but does not keep you in to it at all up to 23 I have seen 5 cut scenes (possibly one more) and none got you in to the story the only one I found any interest in was the story of the main city. Tera is lacking story based content way to much for me to consider buying this is my biggest problem with this game aside from leveling system we will get to that next.

Leveling : The speed you get levels is too fast but people say its a grind fest and they are not wrong, Allow me to explain this game has no starting content at all besides a 12 level training and a 11 added level “train track path” as some people have called it or more known as questing system. This system is trash, boring, over done and not rewarding what makes it worse is you need to follow the questing system to get good exp and to know where to go next to continue to get good exp. Comparing this to FF11 it took 6 months to a year to max out a job/class in FF11 but the game was fun because it had so much content too much even everything was slow in FF11 ALSO there was no PVP and the game is still going after 10 years.
All I’m saying is even with half the content amount plus the PVP in Tera you could have a good game for a long time. GIVE US STORY CONTENT AND GOALS! not just kill each other and linear lazy leveling system you need both to make a game shine you cannot have just story or you get FF13 *shiver* MMO makers need to know why there games fail so fast and its simple its because they do not put Meaningful goals mixed in to a story THATS a real RPG and THAT’S why all these MMO’s only go for a year or so they probably plan it that way to hype up a new game for the next year idk there agenda but they are failing me and everyone else that likes RPG’S!.

Character customization : I can tell they put a lot of work in to the faces textures and tails/horns but no body size variations is silly not a game breaker just meh.

The queuing system is horrid waiting an hour plus because they don’t want say 2 slayers or sumthing going in at once especially when there is low pop on or low pop time of day(not exactly sure why).

Sandbox/Liner/Game play: getting to 23 I got 5 classes/jobs to 23 and played all 5 of them the same exact route this is not horrible but take WOW for example you pick a horde/alliance you pick your race you start in that race area and this is why I think ppl like wow at the start even tho it has the crappy questing system it changes it up a bit with mobs and scenery with competition as does (again) FF11 or >>Star trek/SWG << lawl games and since TERA is focused around pvp in its current state is a horrid idea because there is no real rivalry even FF11 had a rivalry with the weekly assessment to see what city took over what area and got the items and free teleports also free way point markers for the area they have taken. these are just examples of what tera is missing and why it feels incomplete IMO of course they tried for a PVP and PVE game and only got half of each side right :P

This is my Review on the improvements not so much on the good points because they dont need improving heh.
these are improvements not a bash I really want Tera to do good I have even sent some advice to the chat support who where always friendly and nice also speak to you like a freakin person and not a robot

  43. I love the combat in Guild Wars 2 that’s all I know, it’s fast and fun. can be a bit to much of all the dodging. but apart from that it’s fantastic.
Tera I haven’t even tried but I actully want to try it, but I’m not sure if I’m ready for a monthly fee again :P

  44. Here’s what I think on its end-game and future improvements.
GW2 = B2P = will have fewer or minor updates in the future.
Tera = P2P = will have more updates and support.

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. Being B2P and P2P has NOTHING to do with the content or future updates. Gw2 has been and is still being updated regularly, Anet has done a great job and will continue to do so. It’s the company that really matters.

  46. I’ve played both. Whilst they are both great games with their own unique characteristics, gw2 for me has been the best experience overall and can be played again and again feeling like a different adventure each time.

  47. @LisamonroeLMAO…your just a GW fanboy. Why hating so much?is it because it has a better gameplay mech than what you play?I play both GW is really fun with alot to do,but in terms of fighting mech…face it tera is ALOT and i mean ALOT better.GW added weapon skills but its just the same tap targeting, while in tera you actually need to move, dodge and aim.So dont be hating just because you dont want a imperfection of GW to show
