Introducing TERA: Naughty Titans and Lore

Welcome back to a series of quick preview articles covering TERA Online. In Part 1, I gave a quick introduction to the title and its most distinguishing features. Some of you, like Reavijinoo, are already keeping TERA on the radar. Others still need some convincing, so let’s get to it. Today, we are going to talk about the lore surrounding the game.

Narrative wise, we’ve been given enough information to start forming our perception of the world of Arborea. The story of TERA is easy to get into but hard to grasp. Basically, there were two titans who’ve arranged to meet each other someplace quiet, where no one could disturb them. After a period of prolonged intercourse, they fell asleep, with the world of Arborea forming around them.

Oh, you don’t believe me? Here’s the official description of this event:

The world of TERA began millennia ago when two titans of unimaginable power, Arun and Shara, met in a formless void. For reasons we can only guess, they fell asleep. And as they slept, Tera took shape around them.

Reasons we can only guess? Come on, En Masse! Have any of you ever attempted to have intercourse that spanned hundreds of centuries? Thought so. Anyone would have been tired, but I like how you shrugged it off as if it isn’t a big deal. Those titans sure know how to party.

Turns out, Arun and Shara were also avid practitioners of lucid dreaming, making the manifestations of their sleep come to life. The first twelve creatures to be born were very powerful, godlike even. As the two titans continued to dream, less powerful creatures emerged. These mortals were numerous, varied in their appearance and apparently, very gullible.

In the War of Deities, the twelve immortal beings fought each other, easily dragging the mortal races of Arborea into the conflict. The fallout was devastating: several races were completely wiped out and most of the gods left defeated, their divinity diminished.

Things were quiet for some time, as the various creatures, big and small alike, tried to recover from the terrible incident. And now, a new menace is rearing its ugly head – Argons, metallic beasts of the Underworld. Their aim – to end the dream for everyone, their method – to destroy Arun and Shara. Yet, the scarred lands of Arborea are full of hope. For the race of humans has risen amidst the harsh rivalries and old grudges to create the Valkyon Federation, and the different races of Arborea have banded together in order to repel the approaching threat.

Their only hope of survival is to rely on each other’s strength, yet even amidst the allies, the seeds of doubt have firmly taken root. Will the Federation succeed in its crusade against the Argons or will Arun and Shara die in their sleep, bringing an end to all life?

Stay put for the next installment, where the different races of TERA and their relationships with each other will be covered.
