RealID on the WoW Forums: Scrapped!

Your real name is safe from WoW — for now.

According to a post made this morning by Mike Morhaime, co-founder and CEO of Blizzard Entertainment, “we’ve decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums.” Morhaime went on to say, “[O]ur connection with our community has always been and will always be extremely important to us.”

Earlier this week Blizzard announced their intention to change all their official game forums to supporting true full names only — not character names or pseudonyms. The response was sudden and severe, with over 50,000 (mostly negative) posts showing up in the Blizzard feedback topic, not to mention stories and complaints all across mainstream media.

This was a hugely divisive topic to WoW players, and personally I am extremely relieved to see that Blizzard has come to their senses and responded to the torrent of negative response from their players.
