Hot on the heels of its fifth event, Trion Worlds’ wildly popular Rift beta series is approaching its sixth installment, entitled “Planar War”. The hype behind this AAA offering is staggering – player participation more than doubled between then last two beta events, logging a total of 2.4 million hours in the most recent installment. Being the obsessed fanboy that I am, I scraped up every last bit of my free time and shoveled it directly into the gratifying experience that is Rift.
This much is clear: Trion Worlds is channeling the entirety of their creative and technical ability into this game – and it shows. In this day and age, polish is pretty much a must-have for any MMO launch; many a developer has learned this the hard way (I’m looking at you, Mythic and Funcom!), and us fans can be downright demeaning to those poor souls. But hey, they take our money every month, so it’s all in good faith. I guess.
Rift: Planes of Telara isn’t just eye candy – the game is already steeped in meaningful lore, and all the game mechanics that today’s players would expect out of a AAA MMO are there, and then some. I fully expect Rift to continue gaining momentum through the next two beta phases, tapering off into what I humbly foresee as a smooth and exciting launch.
In addition to raising the level cap by 5, Trion Worlds is offering an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 video card to a certain special someone. How do you become this certain special someone? Seal up any rift, collect planar loot, and you are automatically entered to win.
Beta begins February 4th at 10AM PST; if you haven’t already, sign up for a beta invite at the official site.
