PlanetSide 2 Beta Delayed, SOE Files for New Trademark

Let’s just get the bad news out of the way. Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley announced that PlanetSide 2’s beta has been delayed. The good news is that the hold off is just for a few days. According to the Twitter post and follow-up conversation, PlanetSide 2 will be dropping into Closed Beta testing on Friday, August 3 or Monday, August 6.

Reason being, “The team is working like crazy but we need to polish some stuff and test it before we let in a massive # of people.” That’s as good a reason as any.

Also from the SOE camp is a new trademark filing for something called Reign of Fear. The filing didn’t come with any specific links to an existing property, so it could be something entirely new, or the company is keeping its cards close to its chest. The language does make it ring as an MMORPG, including “video game software providing downloadable multiplayer, roleplaying, real-time” via the Internet or LAN.

The LAN mention makes it interesting. Few classic MMORPGs are LANable.
