[UPDATE 9.1.10] Now the beta has been rescheduled to start tonight as of 7 p.m. PDT. I’m hoping it actually happens this time!
[Earlier] With the looming release of Final Fantasy XIV only a month away and knowing that my system can handle its hefty requirements, it was with great excitement that I heard the news late last week that an open beta test was on the horizon. In fact, it was scheduled to begin today, and I even started my morning looking at an e-mail reminding me to sign up.
But alas, upon making my way to the site to begin the pre-installation process, it was with great sadness that I saw the news. The FFXIV open beta test has been postponed because of “critical bugs,” and a new schedule for testing has yet to be released. I’m hoping, and I’m sure I’m not the only one, that it’s not too long until we find out. After all, the game’s release is coming soon — and hopefully that won’t get pushed back.
In the meantime, we can satisfy our cravings for Final Fantasy goodness by watching the latest trailer (including theme song), also released late last week with the initial announcement of the open beta.
Also, at least through part of today you can continue downloading the client. And click through for the full announcement:
Final Fantasy XIV Open Beta Testing Delayed
FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test, which is scheduled to begin at 19:00 (PDT) on Aug. 31, 2010, will be postponed due to a confirmation of critical bugs. New schedule will be released at a later date.
Along with the postponement of FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test, the issuing of registration code for FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test will be postponed as well. With the download of client software’s installer, it will be suspended at 19:00 (PDT) on Aug. 31, 2010.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
That version of the announcement is taken from the from the official North American website, but the delays seem to be throughout all regions. Let’s hope that the Square Enix team is able to work through whatever issues are plaguing the beta.
I’m sorry, but, when I saw the post, I litterly pointed a finger at the screen and went “Ha, Ha!”.
:P
But on a serious note, I hope this comes up soon. I know there’s gotta be a ton of people QQing over this.
What’re your thoughts about the experience handicap?
@Kyndranigar
I actually had a whole big post written up about it until the explanations got even more confusing and I gave up in frustration. Whatever form it takes at the end of the day, it’s a really terrible idea.
You mean the fatigue system? CAD made the best explanation on it.

To put it simply, you just gain XP up too a point, then it slows down, then it stop’s. Then when you’ve stopped for a bit, you can pick up on it again. OR wait till a hard reset which is once a week.
Either way, it’s kind of a head scratcher. I mean, I guess it prevents people who just want too grind the crap out it to have an unhealthy experience and burn themselves out, but it also limit’s game play which is something most developer’s/CEO’s Want there player base to do.
It’s kind of a double edge sword. It either works or it doesn’t.
I totally just remembered why I liked the FF franchise from that video. I never totally got into the game, but the sheer scales they use is epic, and the stories tend to be also.
I want to try the game, but I fear it’ll rape my computers I have.
