The big Guild Wars 2 news from day two of PAX Prime was the announcement that players would be able to join an unlimited amount of guilds. Not a whole lot of information about this has been released yet, but what is known is that players will be able to choose, at any time, which guild they are affiliated.
Completing activities with guild-mates will earn players influence points for that guild, which can then be spent towards guild upgrades, such as storage or special in-game boosts. Guilds that meet certain requirements will also be able to capture keeps in World vs World vs World PvP and use their influence points to upgrade those keeps.
I’m not sure if I like the idea of being allowed to join multiple guilds. On one hand it allows you to switch from guild to guild if no one is online, so you aren’t sitting their in public chat LFGs to quest with. It also does away with guild hoppers since there’s really no reason for them to jump around anymore.
But on the other hand I think it it opens the door for players to game the system. A few guild rewards have already been mentioned, which all seem to be tied to the actual guild, but if any player rewards are introduced then I can see certain individuals joining as many guilds as possible just to get more rewards.
Some people also have argued that allowing multiple guilds will diminish guild loyalty, but I don’t buy that argument. Players who are not going to be loyal because of this are going to be the same people that jump from guild to guild.
A solution to this could be some sort of loyalty system built in where the more influence points you acquire for you guild the more loyalty rewards you get. However it would have to work in a tug-of-war like fashion where the more loyalty you gain with one guild the more you lose with your other guilds. This way players couldn’t game the system to get the loyalty rewards with more than one guild.
As more details to the Guild Wars 2 guild system are released in the final day at PAX, we’ll have the info for you.
I really, really don’t like this.
As, what most players would consider a hardcore guild, my guild doesn’t allow members to belong to other guilds – on any character.
If you’re part of our guild, then you are working towards the success of our guild. Not hopping around, looking for someone to hold your hand through everything. You said you weren’t worried about guild loyalty as those people would be the hoppers anyway? Except, we don’t want hoppers. If someone is a hopper, then they don’t belong with us – as soon as they leave, they’re gone and we’re better off. But if they won’t leave because they can leech off us and still belong to multiple guilds…
Guild Wars 2 is doing a lot of really great things, and I am really excited for it, but this just makes me cranky.
I haven’t seen the original quote, just what I read here…
But is there any chance they are saying that your different charchters don’t all have to be in the same guild (like GW1)?
Either way, should be interesting if nothing else…
I loved having multiple “guilds” in Final Fantasy XI it allowed me to meet new people and have a lot of friends. It also eliminated the stupid rivalries that formed in other games.
Game over. 3rd update on pvp that is failing. This is just more proof they can’t handle mmo elements in this SINGLE PLAYER RPG with MULTIPLAYER ELEMENTS. It is not an mmorpg as it is missing persistent open worlds, A usefull crafting system (they seem to throw some broken one in to prove “oh look the second one iis mmorpg…no..no its not”). and I like how they added a cash shop to it, much like EA battlefield single player FPS that have multiplayer clients… this game just wields swords so people autmatically think “Swords = mmorpg”. Ppfffttt. Play Dragonsnest. Cherry credits version. Already epic and pwns this game.
@ZaneStriker How do you figure no member of your guild is part of another guild on an alt that you don’t know about? I know a couple of social groups in my area who have similar tyrannical rules, so my friends and I keep away from them.
Have to admit, i havent tried a multiple guild system before – its always been one guild or another which seems like the way it should be pick a team and thats your team.
Not sure I like the idea, the arguement of eliminating guild rivalries doesnt wash with me, as its a game there sgould be rivalries and a sense of competition between groups.
Having an alt in a different guild is not the same, when i play as a differnt character I class it that im playing a different game; but the same character in two or three different guilds would be weird – and seems a bit wrong.
I like this. I used to rant how it should be possible in GW1 few years ago in the RA outpost. Maybe some mod was listening to me, haha, well maybe not. Anyway, this will make things more interesting and complex, adds realism in a good way, and gives players more freedom. If you don’t like it, you can always devote your life to just one guild. Just don’t expect anyone else to be like that.
I’m happy to see that Anet is actually trying new things to make their game differend from the gray maninstream BS.
Wonder if i join for ex:guild A,B and guild C.
Will the other guilds know about my 2 other guilds. If not i can see good spying Opportunities on other guilds.
For example lets say im loyal to guild A,i can send them info about tactics of guild B and C.
And if i am carful enough i wont get caught. If i do get caught,i will probly be kicked and the world will be told im a spy and ppl will not accept me in other guilds. ;D
I know alts is used in some other games to spy,but this way it would be more realistic and cooler cause you do it as a main.
If not,i think this sux haha.
Here it is 2014 and it’s still a broken mechanic. Being able to be in multiple guilds is USELESS. You can only represent one guild, and that is the only guild you can effectively communicate with. There is no cross-guild communication, and at least GW1 had alliances with “alliance chat” where you could communicate within your own little alliance community. Spvp is crap, WvW is crap, and there’s been very little updates to WvW in 2 years, and the few updates they did make to WvW were met with extreme disappointment (after being forced to wait for months after one broken promise after another) and harsh criticism. When the forum posters went to the forums to tell developers their opinions, they were promptly informed that they were a minority and development wouldn’t be listening to them. Then there was the whole snafu of an Arenanet employee trolling some players in WvW. This is mostly a “carebear” hand holding MMO catering to PVE players. Far from the ridiculous marketing hype they force fed it’s core followers from GW1 that had patiently awaited it’s released after several failed projected release dates.
