SMITE: Demigods, Deities and Gods Explained – Geb

Dear crits. You've been negated. <3 Geb

SMITE: Demigods, Deities and Gods Explained is a column dedicated to introducing prospective players of SMITE to its massive back story of lore. From the Greek to Hindu, each week we’ll look at two characters from a major pantheon and provide a quick recap of their history and in what capacity their digital incarnation will represent on the field of Hi-Rez Studios’ upcoming MOBA.

Lore: Geb is a middle generation of the Egyptian royal family known as the Ennead. Comprising of his grandfather Atum, his parents, wife/sister Nut and their offspring Osiris, Set, Isis and Nephthys, the collection reigned over the most important aspects of Egyptian life. Geb and wife Nut represented the Earth and Sky respectively. The domain of the Earth in such a fickle ecological system meant Geb was highly regarded, feared and worshiped.

Geb, like most of his counterparts, saw his lore modified during the reign of Egyptian society. It wasn’t until more recent times that Geb become a deity depicted as one with Earth and vegetation. Previous to the bearded, plant-bearing anthropomorphic model scene in later periods, the God of Earth could be seen as a crocodile, ram or bull. More famous was his depiction as humanoid in body with the head of a snake. The serpents being regarded as sons of the Earth. Earthquakes, the barren desert and vital Nile crops were all at his behest.

Despite the high status, Geb isn’t a core lore character. His children, especially Osiris and Isis have a more storied history.

In-Game: Geb is yet another magical guardian that needs to get up close and personal. Calling him tanky would be an understatement. The God of Earth is created of the hardest material in SMITE making criticals hit for only 25% of their normal damage. He’s capable of guarding allies directly by applying a shield to them (or himself) that cleanses and absorbs damage. Not tank in SMITE is useless though. For instance, Geb can harry his opponents relentlessly by rolling into a ball and chasing them, slowing and causing knockback.

Capable of standing against the most vicious assassin’s Hi-Rez Studios has devised thus far, Geb is a versatile tank with numerous tricks up his rocky sleeves. Capable of running down opponents and outright negating swaths of damage any aggressive Geb player would benefit from Combat Blink to get into the thick unexpectedly. He’s fully capable of dropping enemies so a mix of additional defense and magic power will set your opponent’s heart to quaking. Grab items such as Sovereignty, Void Stone and Mystical Mail, optioning in like items depending on team composition.
