SMITE: Demigods, Deities and Gods Explained is a column dedicated to introducing prospective players of SMITE to its massive back story of lore. From the Greek to Hindu, each week we’ll look at two characters from a major pantheon and provide a quick recap of their history and in what capacity their digital incarnation will represent on the field of Hi-Rez Studios’ new MOBA.
Lore: Nox has a preponderance for stalking around the darkness. She’s at the beginning and the end of creation where there was nothingness as far as the eye could see. Wielding the extraordinary power of darkness itself she became the Goddess of Night. Her power was so great and beauty to enchanting it was said that even Zeus himself feared her wrath, staying his hand when one of her kind upset the God of the Sky.
Being an originator, perhaps that of Chaos itself depending on the source, Nox is responsible for the creation of much of the early Roman pantheon. Naturally, the majority of her offspring dealt in her realm of darkness, such as Hypnos bringing mortals to bed or Thanatos offering an eternal nap. Other children, like Hemera, the goddess of day, is never seen with her mother again. Continuously cycling their appearances to create the circadian cycle we live by today.
Nox is only more evidence that the originally joke-filled pantheon of the Romans is heading towards a serious nature. I guess we can put that insight to bed now.
In-Game: Nox is a complicated magical mage in SMITE. Much of her power relies on the actions, perhaps more appropriately, the misactions of others. Her passive empowers her for a free ability as those around her light her candles by casting abilities. In the same vain, players targeted with her shadow (ultimate) will damage themselves and lower her other cooldowns dramatically by casting abilities. Aside from the situational happenings, Nox possesses two coordinated skill shots. In tandem, they can unleash an incredible amount of dark power on multiple foes.
Nox must be played carefully to optimize her power, but her build isn’t all that unique from other magical area effect mages. No matter your choice of venue items with magical power and magical penetration should be in your sights. Think Spear of the Magus, Rod of Tahuti and Polynomicon. Secondary to outright destruction is keeping yourself alive and your abilities flowing. Go on the defensive with a Breastplate of Valor or hope to escape (or continue chasing) with a Gem of Isolation.
