SMITE World Championship: Day 3 Results

lh_smite_world_championship_titan_cognitive_prime_team_profileThis is where the bread and butter is. What all the teams have trained for over the course of months and years, Day 3 of the SMITE World Championship. Making it this far firmly cements a squad as one of the greatest in the world. The number one seed Cognitive Prime comes into the championship game without dropping a set running through the winners bracket. Titan is more tuckered out after earning its way through the quarterfinals and past SK Gaming. The Consolation match features the heavy hitters of the regional championships, SK Gaming from Europe and Cognitive Red out of North America. Consolation is no joke thanks to Odyssey contributions pushing that award over $300,000.

Best of three Consolation Series

Cognitive Red vs. SK Gaming (2-0)

Cognitive Red refused to alter its strategy too much throughout the tournament. The consistent aggressive play off the backs of typical draft pick enabled them to force every team fight and gain map control. On the flip side, SK Gaming added some cheese to the match with less routine picks that ultimately got them in trouble. Red controlled the flow of both games at all points for a lopsidded series against their European equals in today’s opening and rather lackluster series. Even if you’re a Cog Red fan seeing such professionals as SK Gaming get outplayed so badly doesn’t make for enjoyable viewing. For instance, in game 2 SK Gaming scored its first kill defending the final push.

Best of five Championship Series
Titan vs. Cognitive Prime (2-3)
Titan and Cognitive Prime came into the finals strong. Prime may have had a hiccup facing its sister team in Cognitive Red dropping its first game of the tournament, but Titan handedly bumped SK Gaming to the consolation prize. Coming in as number one seeds both teams were well scouting consistently banning the favored gods of the other team. In the first two games the picks and bans by Titan were aimed at shutting down MLCSt3alth who was unphased and able to carry his team with his deep god roster reaching back to Nox and Zhong Kui. Titan turned the tables in game three by coming out aggressive to shut down roaming ganks and map control by Prime. The switch to tankier gods and dropping an ultra carry enabled the squad to pick up the next two matches to force a decisive fifth game for all the marbles. Prime reacts to the new strategy with defensive bans and picks to a tank-based squad adding in more damage and sustainability to the team composition. The reactionary strategy and return to forcing team fights on its grounds give Prime another lopsided victory and a $1.3 million bonus!
