MOBA Monday: There’s a Storm on the Horizon

MOBA Monday is a weekly showcase of how to perform, eh, let’s go with adequately – we hope – in a multiplayer online battle arena. The streaming squad features the hottest, upcoming or most interesting titles of their and the communities fancy for a few rounds of PvP shenanigans in our weekly Twitch channel staple.

Two weeks ago I was chilling on my couch doing nothing in particular. Your basic night in on the weekend to recharge by relaxing. I’m pretty sure that the NBA playoffs were on the boobtube and this here laptop rested on its namesake. It was somewhere during this undirected evening that I received a text. Nothing unusual, right? Well, it came from an unknown number but read something to the effect of “What video game am I watching on ESPN2 right now?”

Naturally, you likely realize what that game was. Heroes of the Storm, of course, and the event that precipitated the (seemingly) random text was the Heroes of the Dorm collegiate tournament. It was a bit of a big deal on Twitter and well discussed around the net. And sports talk shows, etc. Some of it was awesome, sparks of interest or shock at how different games are since the last time a person may have viewed the medium. Some of that discussion was the sad referencing of age-old gamer stereotypes. A blatant fear of change. Overall really tiresome

But the saying goes that no press is bad press. At the very least the showing of the tournament on ESPN2 brought the title, which heads to open beta this month and launches June 2, to a much wider audience. Very likely one that would never have seen the game. Potentially ever.

With that being said come join us and the rest of the community of basement dwellers as we take part in Blizzard’s latest attempt to take over the world. Oh, and don’t forget the newly announced Heroes of the Storm Starter Pack. Actually it’s plural. There are four bundles currently undergoing “testing” by Blizzard Entertainment. The packs are similar in design to the Founder pack meaning I’m personally not that enthused.
