Turbine Resurrecting Asheron’s Call 2 [Update]

Yeah, you read that correctly, Asheron’s Call 2: Fallen Kings is making a return. I didn’t believe my friend when he linked me to the forum post from Turbine, but, expecting to get Rick Rolled, I clicked the link to find out the new was legit.

Unless this is an April Fool’s Day joke way in advance (or late), then Turbine Entertainment is truly going to necromance the sequel to its first big hit, Asheron’s Call. Originally released in November 2002, Asheron’s Call 2 failed to surpass its predecessor and was shutdown in December 2005, two years after Turbine purchased the intellectual property rights of AC from Microsoft. Earlier that year, Turbine released the sole expansion, Legions.

We’ve asked Turbine to clarify if Legions will be a part of Dawnsong.

Before you begin calling the end of days, the game is only accessible to current Asheron’s Call subscribers, or those willing to pick up a copy of Asheron’s Call: Throne of Destiny and activate a subscription. Two games for the price of one, literally!

The sad news is that while there is a spiffy new server running the game, Dawnsong, no previous characters are available. If you’re a current subscriber, grab the install files and get in game. Otherwise, you could grab this $3 item from Amazon and become one.

It’ll be interesting to see how this impacts the subscription numbers for Asheron’s Call, a 13 year-old MMORPG, in the short- and long-term.

[Update]

A spokesperson for Turbine has further good news for those interested in Asheron’s Call 2. The content from the Legions expansion pack is part of the Dawnsong server!
