SMITE: Demigods, Deities and Gods Explained is a column dedicated to introducing prospective players of SMITE to its massive back story of lore. From the Greek to Hindu, each week we’ll look at two characters from a major pantheon and provide a quick recap of their history and in what capacity their digital incarnation will represent on the field of Hi-Rez Studios’ upcoming MOBA.
Lore: Hmm, how to introduce Nu Wa. Well, let’s just hit it with the title of the snake of a lady, Guardian of Heaven. This is no token position, as a child of the Jade Emperor, Nu Wa is, quite simply, the creator of mankind in Chinese mythology. On par with the Titans of Rome and the Aesir of Norse mythology, the mythology around Nu Wa places the god at the center of creation, or in lesser tellings, at least the repairer of the Wall of Heaven.
It’s the shattering of the Wall at the hands of Gong Gong that Nu Wa is bound to the many crystals that give her power in SMITE. After Gong Gong came to blows with another powerful god over a petty quarrel, the water god, smashed Mount Buzhou, a pillar that held the sky. Utilizing the legs of a giant tortoise to replace the fractured pillar and sealing the wall with seven different colors, Nu Wa saved the animals and humanity that she created out of yellow clay.
In-Game: Nu Wa is a magical mage commonly utilized to push and hold lanes. One of the more complex characters in SMITE, the Guardian of Heaven utilizes her seven unique crystals to buff herself through ability use with speed, protections and basic damage modifications. As a mage, she’s capable of building solid sustained magical damage and AoE damage.
Nu Wa can focus on pushing her lane easiest by maximizing the usage of her Clay Soliders. Stacking her own protections, including general Health to make her minions tanky and her own defense with items like Telkhines Ring or a Breastplate of Valor, will ensure she can remain in lane. Adding items to reduce cooldowns and increase damage will make her more dangerous and a force to be reckoned with in team fights.
